A Look at Social Media and the Law

Social media can be a boon for a company, but the complexities of liability and compliance can transform it to a bane. To help firms navigate unsettled waters, an international law firm created a free online webinar on social media legal policies.

Actiance Captures Enterprise Social Media Data in Alcatraz

Social business is the norm for most companies these days. But those enterprise social conversations can be hard to track and re-assemble if a company has compliance or other legal requirements.

This week, governance platform provider Actiance revealed a cloud-based archive designed to accommodate the context of social media, a new product that goes by the catchy name of Alcatraz.

Another One Bites the Dust: RIP Microsoft Exchange Server 2003

Along with Windows XP, life support is running out for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. If your business is still running this 11-year-old mail, contact and calendar server, prepare to face a black hole when it comes to future problems.

With many businesses already using one of the server's three future generations — and with alternatives like Zimbra, Novell GroupWise and others — what will laggards pick when they finally move on? Cloud-based office solutions are just one appealing option.

A Square Peg in Round Holes: Using SharePoint for Multiple Solutions

SharePointSquarePeg.jpgWhen I discuss SharePoint's value with various decision makers one thing always comes up: the value of using it as a single platform to fill multiple needs within an organization. Companies may have initially implemented SharePoint as a way to collaborate and share data, but then find they also have the tools needed for a corporate intranet or public website. An initial investment provides a path for multiple solutions. This, for many reasons, can be a very appealing approach.

Designing Beautiful Organizations is Within Our Reach

Designing Organizations to Awaken Beauty is the Call of Our Time"The human soul is hungry for beauty: we seek it everywhere – in landscape, music, art, clothes, furniture, gardening, companionship, love, religion and in ourselves. When we desire the Beautiful, there is a sense of homecoming. Some of our most wonderful memories are of beautiful places where we felt immediately at home. We feel most alive in the presence of the Beautiful for it meets the needs of our soul … to awaken beauty is the call of our time."  -- John O’Donohue

“The human soul is hungry for beauty.”

Not just in music, art or clothes. We yearn for beauty at work, in our communities and in the products and services we buy.

Don't Let 2014 Be the Year of the Ostrich: Stop Ignoring Rogue IT

Don't Let 2014 Be the Year of the Ostrich: Take Action on Rogue ITWhat do global warming, international terrorism and rogue IT have in common? More than you might think. All three have the potential to cause serious damage, and all three are ticking time bombs that will go off if we ignore them. But despite concerted efforts to deal with the first two, nothing is being done to deal with the third.

My Recipe for a Perfect Intranet

How to Build the Perfect IntranetIs it possible to build the perfect intranet? Like any project, there will be a unique set of requirements that dictate the exact nature of the solution -- things like integrating with line of business systems or mimicking a corporate website look and feel. But intranet design is now a mature enough discipline that I think it is possible to break down the "perfect" intranet into a number of key areas.

NewsGator Bids Farewell to Its Name, Becomes Sitrion

Shakespeare may have understood the true nature of roses, but he didn’t understand branding. Brand names can tell a lot about a company, but when a company’s focus changes, sometimes its name still points in the old direction. That’s what happened with NewsGator, which has now changed its name to Sitrion.

How Nat Geo Built One of the World's Best Intranets

All told, it was a 30-month project that began with a request: Improve the intranet. So National Geographic did just that for its employees -- and got some international recognition in the process.

Nielsen Norman Group named the 126-year scientific and educational institution as the creator of one of the world's 10 best intranets in its 14th Annual Intranet Design Contest earlier this month.

This year's winning teams and their intranets are showcased in Nielsen Norman Group’s new 319-page report “Intranet Design Annual 2014: The Year’s 10 Best Intranets” (it costs $248 to download).

This week, CMSWire talked to Keelin Vaccaro, internal communications director at the National Geographic Society. Vaccaro led National Geographic’s complete redesign of its intranet, transforming the site from a static communications vehicle to an interactive, social site.

SharePoint Strategy: Focus on Productivity Improvements

SharePoint Strategy: Focus on Productivity ImprovementsWith an updated platform release, companies often reflect on the state and well-being of their existing investments, asking themselves whether a move to the newest version is necessary, or possible. The same can be said for reviews of SharePoint implementations. A common question from executives to the teams and stakeholders who own and manage SharePoint is "How productive are our end users in SharePoint?"

5 Tech Trends We'll See More of in 2014

From 2013 Trend to 2014 Workplace RealityEvery year brings plenty of hype around the promise of what new technical advancements and capabilities can bring to organizations trying to transform their businesses. There are also plenty of things that never quite live up to the promised hype. Let’s take a look at what to expect in 2014.

Collaboration in 2014: 10 Predictions

Social Business, Collaboration in 2014: 10 PredictionsNetworked organizations, personalization and customization, development of collaborative reputations: these trends and more that I predicted for 2013 will still hold true for 2014. But as the cloud and mobile mature, new trends are emerging for 2014. Kelly Services and oDesk just did a deal together -- I think this is the first time an old style temp agency has done a deal with a crowdsourcing / expertise company. Kind of like the lamb lying down with the lion, something you don’t expect to see. But we should expect more of this as markets consolidate, the IoT goes more mainstream and we see collaboration become an important part of big data.

Collaboration in 2013: What Predictions Came True?

Collaboration in 2013: What Predictions Came True? Before I look forward to what 2014 might hold for collaboration, I wanted to look at how I did with my 2013 predictions. It turns out my crystal ball was working well, but some of the trends have been slower to start.

Looking for Influencers in Your Company? Look to Content Before Metrics

Viewing Influence in Your Enterprise Social Network - Look to Content Before MetricsIf influence is vague -- encompassing anything from peer pressure to marketing (cults, hazing, “As Seen On TV” ads, political campaigns, protests for peace and love, regrettable fashion trends) -- then influencers are powerful. By their definition, one can assume they have influenced more than once. They have achieved buy-in, trust and a reputation that results in more than the ability to spark passing fads.

But how far can the charisma and dynamism of a few individuals take your business?

Reflections on Work-Family Balance in the Mobile Enterprise

Work and Family in the Mobile Enterprise: Reflections on Priorities“Whoever is dialing in from Disney World, please mute your phone.”

So began a company conference call I was on several years ago while on winter vacation with my family. As my wife and kids rode the Mad Hatter tea cups ride, I was able to deal with the latest company "crisis" … from the convenience of Magic Kingdom. And the ability to be accessible anywhere, anytime is magic indeed.

But not always.
