The latest release of EllisLab's commercial open source publishing system, ExpressionEngine 2.3, includes new user-requested features and security improvements -- including more than 70 bug fixes.

EllisLab, the makers of the ExpressionEngine (news, site) Web CMS software, has released ExpressionEngine 2.2, bringing significant asset management changes, a host of community-driven improvements and the integration of one important acquisition.

Perhaps the "2" stood for 2 years.

On July 12, EllisLab finally released EE2.1, the first non-beta version of ExpressionEngine 2, a massive change from the EE 1.x line that changes all the underlying code of the software itself, adds an impressive array of new features both large and small, and (EE developers hope) brings to an end a long plateau in the evolution of ExpressionEngine.

MojoMotor, a new, lightweight CMS from EllisLab, was demoed today at #EECI2010. Technology Architect Derek Allard said it was targeted at professional developers, to allow them to create a simple site with minimal setup, one that can be easily maintained by the client without needing a detailed administrative interface.

EllisLab is channeling its energetic growth into commercial markets, formalizing community resources as official EE "projects", and releasing a new product called MojoMotor, said company executives during their keynote address at the ExpressionEngine/CodeIgniter 2010 conference in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Google has challenged popular networks like Facebook and further blurred the line between social networking and search by graduating their Social Search tool to beta for all Google users.  

The team behind ExpressionEngine, a fully loaded content management system from EllisLab Inc., has been teasing us all for weeks.

Version 2.0 of the CMS has been in the works for awhile, but recently enough information has been made available to do a quick preview. The update promises a more powerful engine, a new control panel, and will be built with CodeIgniter.

The registration booths don't open for another 10 days and the moment of truth for what is being called the Ultimate Showdown of Content Management System Destiny is not until 11:30am on March 16th. Nevertheless, the teams competing for the prized moment of Web CMS glory have had their sleeves rolled-up for a while now, and their competition websites have just been turned in and are now available for public viewing and, of course, critiquing. 

Some rivalries run deep: Army vs. Navy, Mac vs. PC, and dogs vs. frisbees. With the release of Moveable Type 4 and the near-simultaneous release of ExpressionEngine v1.6, it's time to to examine this perhaps less well-known rivalry.
