Even in an “economic downturn” some companies are thriving. The open source enterprise solutions provider, eZ Systems, has been on the move in North America over the last few months. And their progress is paying off to the tune of new strategy and hiring plans in the United States.

2009 is bringing big things to eZ Systems, the content management solution provider. Not only are they turning 10 this year, they are hosting the 7th annual eZ Conference and the annual eZ Awards which will be partially geared towards celebrating ten years in the WCM world.

For PHP developers building components and applications can be a headache, especially when doing it from scratch. eZ Systems, creators of the eZ Publish web content management system, have just released eZ Component v2008.2, an open source PHP enterprise application framework that eases developer pains and enables them to focus more on business functionality and less on common application nuts and bolts.

They started out in a single office in Norway back in 2005. Now eZ Systems is all across the world and last time we heard they were headed over to Japan.

But that wasn’t good enough for this open source content management provider — eZ Systems has announced plans to open a new office in Paris. 

eZ Systems is on the cusp of launching a Software-as-a-Service offering for its media-oriented Web CMS, eZ Publish. We covered the original news here, and as promised, we spoke with eZ’s global partner manager Bertrand Maugain to get more insight into the new eZ Publish SaaS offering and their partner in arms, Mamut ASA.

After proving to us that open source CMS can be profitable, eZ Systems decided to go the Software-as-a-Service route with its Web CMS eZ Publish.

Web CMS provider eZ Systems plans to team up with software solutions company Mamut ASA to offer a hosted version of its open source CMS.

eZ Systems, an Open Source Web CMS vendor, joined forces with its Gold Partner Mitsue-Links Co., Ltd. to open an eZ Systems office in Tokyo, Japan, this November.

Although eZ is not new to the Japanese market, the new initiative will further promote eZ Systems’ Open Source Content Management System (CMS) eZ Publish in Japan.

According to eZ CEO Aleksander Farstad, the company has been active in the Japanese market for the last two years, building a partner network and working with “significant” customers. With an accelerated growth in the market, the next step is, obviously, to get direct representation in Japan to support further growth.

eZ Systems Japan will focus on the following:

• Serve as the base for eZ Publish marketing activities in Japan
• Provide specialized for the Japanese market development and support
• Provide consulting services
• Train Japanese eZ Partners

The grand opening of eZ Systems Japan is scheduled for November 5, 2008.

Fact: Open source business models can be profitable and consistent. eZ Systems’ open source Web CMS — eZ Publish — has raked up an impressive triple-digit growth and double-digit renewal rates for the first half of 2008.

This is the first time eZ Systems achieved a profitable bottom line. It took 8 years and more than $US 10 million of investments.

It’s like Christmas all over again for Apple fans as Norwegian Open Source CMS champion eZ Systems has at long last enabled support for their flagship eZ Publish CMS to run on the Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard. Perhaps this pleasant change can be attributed to the recent additions to their board of directors. Or maybe these guys are just on a roll with their recent launch of eZ Publish 4.0 and their newly updated eZ Components Suite.

The first day of the 5th annual eZ Conference, the biggest Content Management conference in Europe, occurred on June 7 in Skien, Norway. The conference opened with a keynote presentation by two of the founders of eZ Systems, Aleksander Farstad, CEO, and Bård Farstad, Director of Strategic Relations.

Aleksander and Bård outlined nine CMS trends, including the move towards consolidation and standardization of CMS platforms and the crucial concept that content management is the core of every business.
