Google Offers Developer Tools for Websites

Everybody knows Google as a search engine. Everyone in this industry knows Google also does lots of other interesting things, from Google Earth to Gmail. What is less known is the wealth of resources and tools that Google provides for website development. Let’s have a look at the most useful tools Google provides to help you build your next website.

Coding in the Cloud: eXo Introduces Java PaaS Development Tools

exo_logo_2010.jpg One thing is certain about eXo’s newest announcement: There isn’t room for even one more buzzword. The company, known for its enterprise portal platform, has announced a private beta of its (wait for it) "cloud hosted social development platform for quickly developing  and deploying mashups in Java platform-as-a-service environments." That’s pretty impressive buzzword density. The announcement might be good for invoking a sarcastic snicker about overzealous marketing teams, if the verbiage didn’t describe exactly what eXo (newssite) has managed to create.

Amazon Sprouts a New PaaS Offering

amazon_aw_logo_2010.jpgReally, what is it with giants and their adoration for beanstalks? Amazon (newssite) has moved up the infrastructure stack and announced the beta release of its Platform as a Service (PaaS), Amazon Elastic Beanstalk. The service makes it easier to manage and deploy applications on Amazon Web Service (AWS) and is free. Will the sprouting of Beanstalk over shadow PaaS competition?

Learn to Develop Cloud-Based Apps with the Google App Engine

Learn to Develop Cloud-Based Apps with the Google App Engine If you are just getting into the web development business and you want to build cloud-based applications, there's no better place to start than with Google. The Google App Engine (news, site) is Google's infrastructure for building and running cloud-based applications.

While there's a lot of documentation on developing using the Google App Engine on Google's website itself, there's another way to learn how to develop these applications - where you are a beginner or an expert.

O'Reilly has released the book Using Google App Engine - Start Building and Running Web Apps on Google's Infrastructure. The book is written by Charles Severance, Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan, and someone who has extensive experience with the development languages used to write Google Apps.

What will you learn? You will learn:

  • Web programming and the move to develop cloud-based applications
  • The basic technologies used to develop Google Apps including Python, HTML and CSS
  • How to Use the Google App Engine Datastore
  • How to Implement Caching and Use Cookies and Session
  • Installing and Running the App Engine on XP, Vista, Mac and Linux
  • and much more

The book is designed for beginners, but offers information that will benefit even the more experienced Google App developer.

Zoho Creator Becomes a Google App Engine IDE

Zoho Creator Takes On Role as Google App Engine IDE

Two major themes on the web today are interoperability and sharing. It's one thing to create a great application or service, but "walled gardens" are looked down upon on the new "social" web.

This was probably the motivation behind Zoho's latest announcement. The company has released news that applications developed by users in Zoho Creator can now be deployed into the Google App Engine.
