Characterizing it as a “Fall Sweep,” Google said it is shuttering Google Buzz, the controversial social networking service and application program interface (API) toolset that works with Gmail, and focus instead on Google+.

Today's big rumor is that Google is cooking up some sort of social network that will challenge Facebook. At least, that's what Digg founder Kevin Rose hinted at on Twitter:

As we're all painfully aware, there's a big push right now to mash pretty much anything popular in the tech world into the enterprise. The question is, is it working? Recent examples from both Google and Apple suggest not.  

We've seen Buzz attempt to get back on the horse over the last couple months. Google fixed their privacy goofs, implemented a double reminder of user settings, and now it appears the company is about to take a shot at the enterprise. Nervous? Yeah, so are a lot of other people.  

Will Google ever be able to make up for the privacy problems that came along with the Buzz launch? Who knows, but they sure are going to try. For instance, now when you login to Gmail, click the Buzz tab and you’ll see a screen asking you to confirm your privacy settings before you continue.

We’ve certainly heard plenty from CEOs about privacy being dead and all, but considering the heat coming from related debates, perhaps it’s time to hear from the opposing team.

Danah Boyd, social media researcher for Microsoft, took the stage at this year’s SXSW conference, and with her 10+ years in the social realm, claimed privacy is alive (but not well), and schooled us on the intricacies of screw-ups from some of the biggest names out there: Google and Facebook.

You might’ve written off Google Buzz by now and, admittedly, we could’ve had a little something to do with it. But Google hasn’t given up on the microblogging tool just yet. In fact, the team’s latest announcement may wash over some of you in an awesome, relief-tinted wave.   

Many of us have wondered if and when social media will knock out the need for e-mail, but a survey from Econsultancy suggests that we’re far from losing touch with our inboxes. In fact, Econsultancy says social media is being used to enhance the effectiveness of e-mail.

 And the shopping sprees continue! Facebook (news, site) recently bought an under-the-radar company called Octazen Solutions—its first purchase since acquiring FriendFeed seven months ago.

Apparently Google’s shopping bug wasn’t squashed when it acquired social search startup Aardvark last week. The company has gone and bought up another email-based startup called reMail, but this time the focus is on mobile capabilities.
