HP Autonomy Focusing on Healthcare Analytics #HIMSS2014

HP HPA

There are two interesting points to note around HP Autonomy’s (HPA) Healthcare Analytics release. The first is that HPA has developed its IDOL technology to target a specific vertical. The second is that it's a self-service platform designed with users in mind rather than IT.

Healthcare Analytics will not be released until next month, but HPA is already talking it up at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference this week in Orlando, Fla.

Think the PC is Dead? You May be Right

death of the pc.jpg

Wall Street must be pretty muted today. It has been a bad week with a lot of big companies calling out some pretty miserable results. IT companies are no exception, but we’re not going to talk about Twitter here. Instead, we’ll simply say Sony’s figures were so bad, that it has decided to pull out of the personal computer market.

It has also decided to pull out of the television manufacturing space, but we don’t really care about that. But PC’s are different though and the announcement by Sony comes just a day before Gartner published figures to show that the European PC market is down another 4 percent.

There are no recent figures for the US market yet, but they should land soon. While analysts will be looking desperately to find a silver lining, it’s a good bet that those figures are going to be pretty poor, too.

All that stuff about the death of the PC ... Maybe it really isn't exaggerated.

HP Autonomy Clouds E-Discovery Trend

Clouds from plane.jpg

If we’ve been carrying on a lot recently about HP Autonomy, it's only because it seems HP has finally cranked up the gears. It's starting to develop Autonomy as an asset rather than looking at it through the lens of the disastrous acquisition process that still hasn’t finished. The latest release is a new cloud-based e-discover offering.

While HP is promoting this as a new product, it's just an old product migrated to the cloud. That makes it accessible not just to big businesses and major law firms, but also to companies in the lucrative small-to-medium business (SMB) market.

Working in Pajamas: The Downside of Telecommuting

Slipping into darkness.jpg

Working from home is the best job ever ... as long as you're willing to tether yourself to technology, produce twice as much as you would in an office, blur every possible work-life boundary and have the discipline to bite your tongue when someone asks you if you ever plan to get a "real" job.

Telecommuting is a disaster for anyone who is unmotivated, disorganized, thin-skinned or has fantasies about working in pajamas. Trust me. I'm speaking from experience.

And remember this: it's the wrong choice if you expect to have regular lunch or coffee breaks (a blessing in disguise, actually, because you often won't have time to avail yourself of the restroom, either.) Your boss will call the minute you step away from your desk, creating suspicion about whether you're working at all. Differences in time zones mean calls at almost any hour of the day (or night).

No wonder those spoiled, entitled, forever-whining tech-obsessed millennials (aka Gen Y) are just so over this whole telecommuting thing. And guess what? They aren't alone.

What You Need to Know Microsoft's New Surface Tablets #CES2014

Microsoft doesn't have an official presence at the International CES in Las Vegas this week. It stopped participating in the opening keynote and abandoned its booths on the show floor two years ago.

But it still conducts behind-the-scenes meetings with partners, hardware manufacturers, mobile operators and developers at the giant consumer electronics show. And it left the biggest footprint among an onslaught of systems from of Lenovo, HP and others.

Among the Microsoft show news: leaks about the Nvidia-powered Surface 3 and Mini tablets — which topped rumors on gadgets like Samsung's Galaxy S5 smartphone.

A Look Back at 2013: The Year Big Data Work Began

big data

If 2012 was the year your grandmother instigated big data conversations at the dinner table (yes, the “buzz” around it actually was that big), then 2013 will go down in history as the year the enterprise began to make serious plans around it.

CIOs are no longer talking about big data in terms of “it’s something we’ve got to do,” instead they’re making plans, putting big data projects into their budgets and writing checks.

HP Turns the Page ... to Cool?

OK, maybe cool is overstating it, but then again, maybe not.

Either way, HP is finally newsworthy for reasons other than being (allegedly) swindled in its purchase of Autonomy and for hiring and firing a succession of CEO’s who (allegedly) did things like give orders for spying, sexually harass an employee, prove unable to come to an agreement with HP's Board of Directors about how the company should be run, and even announce that HP will be getting out of the PC business, which it happens to dominate.

Hey IBM, Oracle, Pivotal: HP Says Its Big Data Analytics Appliance Is Blazing Fast

HP probably isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think “big data” or “analytics,” but if the company has its way, all of that changes starting today.

Forrester Names HP, Cisco, Microsoft Top Private Cloud Vendors

Private cloud computing is going mainstream. It has moved from a technology limited to a handful of innovative enterprises to a technology that has been prioritized for development in the next 12 months by more than half the enterprises surveyed, according to new Forrester research. Differentiation between competing vendors now lies in user experience, ease of use and the provision of hybrid environments.

Is a Turnaround in Sight for HP?

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman may have managed to turn the fortunes of the struggling information technology giant around. The company's share prices climbed as much as 7 percent  in after hours trading on the strength of fourth quarter financial results that beat analysts’ expectations. Have corporate appetites for hardware and networking products returned?

HP Autonomy Unleashes New Data Recovery Vision with Data Protector v8.1

HP Autonomy (HPA) has just announced Data Protector v8.1 will be available in January. While it comes with a bunch of new features, the real significance of this release will be the introduction of an entirely new way of looking at and implementing data recovery.

Reports of the Death of Remote Working Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

Social Business, Reports of the Death of Remote Working Have Been Greatly ExaggeratedAt the beginning of 2013, it seemed that ever-improving mobile technology and home broadband speeds were finally delivering the “work anywhere” nirvana that so many of us had looked forward to. But since then, two unexpected announcements have caused many organizations to stop and reconsider whether they really want their workforce so widely distributed.
