The Internet Explorer browser does not currently support HTML 5, Microsoft has already said that support is coming in version 9. But you really don't want to switch browsers just to get a taste of the new order. Christian Adams has a little something that will do just that. But keep in mind, it is little.

HTML 5 (news, site) is the fifth major revision of the web's core language and it has been designed to support the rapidly changing Web 2.0 world we live in today. Let's take a little tour of what this latest version means for web development.

Team WordPress (news, site) has discovered and destroyed another security bug. This particular problem was considerably more serious than the privilege escalation issues we saw in the last security update, but still not terribly detrimental.

Via a specially crafted URL, an attacker could bypass a security check to verify a user requested password reset. In the event of an unauthorized reset, the first account without a key in the database (usually the administrative account) would have its password reset, and the new password would be emailed to the account owner. Says Matt Mullenweg, founding WordPress developer: "This doesn’t allow remote access, but it is very annoying."

As usual, the WordPress development team was quick to fix the issue, and version 2.8.4 can be downloaded here.

With Beta 1 of Visual Studio 2010 (news, site) out for review, Microsoft is also releasing some extensions to keep us all excited about developing .NET applications. Since 2005, one of Google's more popular projects has been the Google Summer of Code (GSoC). The GSoC is a global program that pairs participating open source projects with student developers. Students accepted to the GSoC receive a stipend and are assigned mentors within specific projects.

The GSoC is definitely a win-win proposition for the students, who gain real world experience and the open source projects, who not only have the chance to get some key features done faster than they would otherwise, but also might gain long-time contributors from the process.

Open Source Web Content Management is well-represented in this year's list of 150 accepted projects. Mentor organizations accepted this year include Drupal, Joomla!, TikiWiki CMS/Groupware, Moodle, Plone, WordPress, Geeklog and Typo3.

Numerous related projects including wikis, foundation technologies like those provided like the Apache Software Foundation and groups such as the Creative Commons whose licenses back a lot of Web Content Management Systems's content were also included.

It's no surprise that HTML 5 is coming. However, it's been a bit easier to miss that a lot of work has also been going into the issue of Web forms.

So much so, that the HTML Working Group has announced that Web Forms 2.0 have been superseded by HTML 5.

Nearly everything can be stored and accessed in the cloud. But until now, an HTML coding editor has not been on that list. In an effort to increase the use of open web technology, Mozilla Labs, innovators of a variety of web technologies, has released an open web HTML editor framework.

HTML, the core syntax markup for the web, is in transition. With new browsers, new technologies, the realization that updates and changes are needed has taken hold. A new version of HTML is in the works. And Adobe has joined the ranks of Opera, Mozilla and Apple to help out.
