"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated," says Internet Explorer, as Microsoft's default Windows web browser regains some of the market share previously lost to its major competitors Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Web browsers are often a highly personal choice. You would usually have a preference based on speed, feature set and compatibility. With the recent release of IE9 and Firefox 4 claiming to be faster than ever, tests have been run to determine speed and stability on each.

Microsoft's (news, site) latest browser is now official for Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, while Firefox 4's final test is publically available.

It seems just a blip in time ago that we were hoping for big things from Microsoft's (news, site) Internet Explorer 8, but two years later, a bigger, better, but nicer-playing replacement is already here.

Microsoft played the schoolyard bully this week when an FAQ post indicated that the upcoming IE9 browser will not run without the not-yet-released Windows 7 Service Pack 1.

The Plone (news, site) 4 Framework Team has put out a call for Plone Improvement Proposals (PLIPs). PLIPs are necessary for any improvements that are larger than a bug fix and should only be submitted if you either plan to do the coding yourself, or pull together people to write it.

Plone 4 will bring Plone up to date with current technologies, while making it easier to work with for integrators and end users. As this release is meant as an intermediate step toward the radically updated Plone 5, hold any changes that "significantly alter backwards compatibility, visuals or APIs" until then.

Turn in your PLIP submissions by 0700 UTC (3am EDT) on 20 June 2009. To do so, look over previous PLIPs as a guide to what format to use, create a ticket with the type PLIP, and then enter your proposal.

Include information such as:

• Why is the change important?
• How will this change be achieved?
• What downsides are there to this change being adopted?

When it's ready for consideration, set the milestone to 4.0. From there, you will receive feedback from the Framework Team. The team will then vote on submissions and set deadlines for when they must be ready. The code must be complete by the stated deadline to be included in the release.

Amazon has recently informed its AWS customers that Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) will allow users to run Microsoft Windows Server or Microsoft SQL Server later this fall. For those who take advantage of those two Microsoft products, this is surely news to get excited about.

Alterian, an integrated marketing platform provider, released the upgraded Immediacy WCMs 6.1. In its latest version, Immediacy features Language Pack capabilities enabling users to work in their local language preference.

Release 6.1 also utilizes many of the latest web technology standards, including AJAX, and improved performance “to blistering levels.”
