Today, IBM unveiled the first offering from that Apple deal -- IBM MobileFirst for iOS solutions. IBM's apps and cloud services mesh IBM’s big data and analytics capabilities to iPhone and iPad users in the enterprise. 

In reality, these IBM deals are enterprise-targeted, but the foundation is business giant meets consumer giant.

International Consumer Machines? ICM? Not quite, but in a year where IBM could use a boost, they're definitely turning to their consumer friends to boost their enterprise big data and analytics offerings.

Apple's iOS 8 operating system is set to hit the streets next month.

We talked earlier this summer about its impact on mobile marketers. How they must be able to adapt to the changes, such as actionable push notifications, a notification center and lock screen widgets, developer access for in-app fingerprint passcodes and updates to limit location tracking.

But the new iOS is also going to have a deep impact on the way documents are accessed and stored on iOS devices, according to Mika Javanainen, product development executive for M-Files, a Dallas, Texas-based content/document management software provider. His thinking?

Apps will be able to extend beyond their sandbox, into other apps, thereby avoiding duplicate document copies during editing. For Apple, this is a huge departure from the separate silos system and makes the iOS platform more appealing to the enterprise market. Microsoft Office is part of the iPad arsenal and 35 million users have downloaded since it was launched in March. Now Microsoft has issued several updates, which it describes as the features users request most often.

The upgrades — improvements for the Word, PowerPoint and Excel applications — are designed to enhance the user experience.

Apple's IBM Play Isn't Only About Selling More iDevices

Apple wants a seat at the enterprise table and IBM will soon be rolling out the red carpet that leads to the boardroom. Sure, Big Blue’s CEO Ginni Rommety might have to help Apple Chief Tim Cook tie his tie and polish his shoes first, but it’s a fair trade.  He might have to tell her the difference between an application and an app. Other than a few small hurdles like those, the earliest days of the IBM and Apple relationship should run smooth.

After all, without needing to sacrifice turf, Rommety’s 103-year-old monolith could be perceived to be cool and forward thinking again. Not only to the old guard that holds IBM Research, with its track record of pushing the boundaries of science, technology and business to make the world work better place, in high regard, but also to the fast tracked execs of the digital generation who have tremendous respect for old guys who get it.

Yes, for IBM the Apple partnership has the potential of doing what Watson hasn’t been able to do —namely making it relevant to Gen Y and the millennials.

Not only that, but Rommety’s slowly sinking ship will be buoyed by consulting fees earned through helping enterprises roll out Mobile in a safe and compliant way.

The future of technology as we know it took a massive step in a new direction today with the news of a partnership between Apple and IBM.

The two tech giants announced a partnership that could shift Apple from its traditional role as a consumer focused brand to a major player in the business market.

IBM plans to create a class of more than 100 business applications exclusively for iPhones and iPads to run on Apple's iOS. IBM will also market Apple's products, complete with 100 industry-specific apps, to its clients worldwide.

What Mobile Marketers Need to Know About iOS 8

At the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple announced a number of changes coming with release of the iOS 8 operating system being rolled out in September. Marketers who communicate with consumers via mobile must be aware of the coming changes so they can adjust their strategies and technology capabilities leading up to the release. It’s important to note though that iPhone 4 will not support iOS 8, so for the time being push strategies taking advantage of new iOS 8 capabilities will need to include legacy support for iPhone users who have not yet upgraded to a new device.

PC Market? Up Slightly, But Still Barely Breathing

Though it appears there will be some relief for the besieged PC market in Gartner’s second quarter predictions for 2014, the relief will be be only temporary.

Overall, the global devices market  will witness a revival in 2014, increasing by 4.2 percent over 2013.

The PC market, which falls under the devices umbrella, will contract 2. 9 percent — considerably less than last year's 9.2 percent .The driving force behind this trend, according to Annette Zimmerman of Gartner, is the ongoing development of the mobile market. However, the longterm direction of the PC market remains downward.

Microsoft Takes Office to the Chrome Store

Only two weeks after Office landed on iPad and about eight weeks since it made it easy to find through the launch of Office.com, Microsoft is chasing users wherever it can find them -- and in this case it's Chrome Web Store, right in the middle of Google’s own stomping ground.

It also appears to have quietly retired its Scroogled campaign.

It would probably be a bit silly to overestimate the real impact of this, given that users were always able to access Office apps through the Office.com in the Chrome browser. But with a new CEO on board, any sign of changes in the way Microsoft is doing business should be paid attention to. 
 

Finally! Office for iPad: Still Want It?

Let's cut to the chase. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s first press conference since he started 52 days ago was pretty underwhelming.

Yes, he finally announced the launch of Office for iPad, along with the new Enterprise Mobility Suite — surprising just about no one.

But all of those who expected something more from Nadella, like detailed insight about his plans for the company, left disappointed. Aside from discussing his Mobile First, Cloud First strategy and those plans to push all Microsoft customers into the cloud, he didn't say much.

But give him points for being poetic, in person and online. As he noted in a blog post, "As long as human curiosity and ambition drive us to create new things, capture moments and collaborate to get things done, we should expect the world of devices to follow suit."

If Microsoft press conferences are always a matter of intense speculation and conjecture, the conference that has been announced for next Thursday (March 27th) in San Francisco will be, by anyone’s standards, an exceptional event -- not least because it will be the first conference hosted by new CEO Satya Nadella. 

Of course, excitement is also being driven by speculation that, finally, Microsoft will be announcing Microsoft Office for iPad.
