Last year Iron Mountain sold off its digital assets to Autonomy. Then Autonomy got gobbled up by HP and we thought that was that. But any fears that Iron Mountain exited the information management space can be put to rest by today’s announcement of its new records management product that works with SharePoint.

Even with the Thanksgiving weekend, there’s been a few notable releases in the document management space. KnowledgeTree announces the release of the Private Cloud edition of document tools, harmon.ie offers SharePoint functionality in LotusNotes, while iNimated offers access to PC documents via iPad. Iron Mountain has also been busy.

For those who are not happy with the records management functionality of SharePoint 2010, the latest partnership between Iron Mountain (news, site) and GimmalSoft (news, site) will be welcome as the companies are getting together to develop a means of managing both physical documents and electronic files for SP 2010.

While the sight of a business manager bristling with indignation over “inefficiencies” in the enterprise is a common one, and one of the accepted methods of increasing productivity is better business processes, research published by Iron Mountain would seem to suggest that, from an IT perspective, a good deal of the problem lies with institutionalized inertia rather that with particular products or workforce segments.

Autonomy (news, site) announced today that it is acquiring Iron Mountain’s archiving, e-discovery and online backup business for US$ 380 million in cash. This acquisition makes Autonomy big. How big? According to company statistics, Autonomy is now responsible for 25 petabytes of customer data and over 25,000 customers, who will now have Autonomy's advanced technology for information governance in private clouds.

While there hasn’t been a lot in terms of new releases this week, the ongoing problems in Iron Mountain are again in the spotlight, while research from both the not-for-profit ISACA, as well as SaaS GRC vendor Compliance 360, shows that compliance will be the major concern for enterprises in the coming 12 months. GRC was also mentioned at last week’s Oracle Collaborate conference.
