WCM Fields Notes is a regular column written in collaboration with Jon Marks (@McBoof), head of development at LBi. This first issue looks at evolving standards in the content management space and how they might influence you when selecting and implementing a web content management system.

Recently, the open source Magnolia CMS (news, site) saw its 4.2 version light that brings hierarchical data modeling, simpler integrations with external data sources, updated STK and a new node-builder extending the JSR-170 standard.

On the last day of the J. Boye 2009 Conference, Aarhus heard its mayor’s plea and slightly warmed/dried up. The event folk exclaimed, “It’s almost summer!”

The rather standard for this time of the year weather was followed by the web content management standards talk. David Nüscheler, the CTO of Day Software, presented his take on the top WCM trends for 2010 from the architecture and standards standpoint.

Day's customer? Evaluating Day CQ5 CMS? CMS geek generally curious about the present and the future of web content management? Check out Day’s (news, site) Ignite 2009 customer summit scheduled to take place in Zürich (October 14-15, 2009) and Chicago (October 28-29, 2009).

Day’s plan for this event is, mainly, to share strategies and customer stories around CQ5 Web CMS that was released in November 2008. CQ5.2 that came out earlier this year included new DAM and Social Collaboration features.

There are several tracks planned at the summit, including business and technical. The business track is focused on CMS project objectives, CQ5 selection and criteria, and CQ5 business results. In the technical track, attendees will look into CMS project objectives and implementation plan, CQ5 deployment details, and lessons learned in best leveraging Day’s CQ5.

Very often, it’s best to get right into the vendor’s camp if you want to get more insight into what’s going on with the company and where it is going. While, as we reported, Day has had many good days lately, nothing beats a chance of being able to talk to the actual customer who had already put a check mark next to that line that says “CMS implementation.” Getting direct access to Day’s management and technical teams wouldn’t hurt either.

A bit of gazing into the crystal ball is also on the menu with one of Gartner’s analysts leading a discussion on where Day and the content management industry are headed in 2010.

Cherry on top: Day’s CTO David Nüscheler will give a sneak peek of the upcoming CQ5.3. Now, that should be interesting.

One of the final sessions at Gilbane SF yesterday was around content standards: CMIS, JSR-170 and JSR-283.

Many realize there are several challenges with CMIS in particular and efficiently working with content from disparate content repositories in general.

The session aimed at shedding light on some of these challenges and possible solutions in the standards space.
 

Fast on the news that Oracle plans to acquire BEA Systems for a reported US$ 6.7 billion — and on BEA’s rapid refusal for so paltry a sum — CEO Michael Moppert of Day released the following statement:

“BEA, as a leader in middleware, makes it the perfect target by a company of Oracle’s pedigree. When combined, these two entities will provide customers with a complete stack, from applications all the way down to the lower levels of technology infrastructure.

“This acquisition will solidify and add relevance to Day Software’s OEM relationships with both Oracle and BEA.”

Day has plenty of reason to feel personally involved in the M&A drama. The company is the enterprise source for JSR 170 and JSR 283, the current and pending standards for content repositories, respectively. Oracle and BEA share leadership roles on the executive committee for the standard.

Day and BEA also have a bit of history in the enterprise content repository field.

Our global CMS and content infrastructure amigos at Day Software have announced JSR 283, v2.0 of the Content Repository for Java Technology API, to the Java Community Process (JCP).

JSR 283 picks up where JSR 170 left off by enabling large enterprises to manage digital content on a global level.

No one can say content management wants for rock stars. CTO David Nuescheler of Day Software has been nominated by the Java Community Process(sm) (JCPsm) Program for the Most Outstanding Spec Lead Award for his JSR 283 travails.
