KnowledgeTree Spreads Its ECM Through Open Tech Channel

KnowledgeTree Spreads Its ECM Through Open Tech ChannelKnowledgeTree  (news, site) is joining Open Tech and taking their document management software to thousands of resellers worldwide.

Open Tech is a new channel created by Tech Data, an IT products distributor. It is designed to support open source ISVs, like KnowledgeTree, by helping them market and sell their solutions to a worldwide market.

KnowledgeTree sees this an opportunity to reach out to resellers who spend their time with customers -- SMBs, enterprises, government -- who want to use open source solutions.

“Interest in open source will continue to grow as resellers and end users become more aware of open source solutions like KnowledgeTree’s document management software,” said Tech Data Vice President, Software Product Marketing Stacy Nethercoat. “Through Open Tech, Tech Data will work closely with KnowledgeTree to educate resellers and enable them to profitably deliver these solutions to their customers.”

Are the days coming -- or are they already here -- when we don't have to think of open source separate from proprietary? Do we really need to differentiate between the two? Or can a solution be sold simply on the merits of its functionality alone? Maybe it's too late in the day to have this discussion -- what do you think?

Version One's Document Management Software Goes Green

Version One's Document Management Software Goes Green UK-based Version One (news, site)  is underling its green credentials with the announcement that it is to launch a carbon measurement tool later this year to measure how many trees and how much carbon is saved by companies who use Version One’s document management software.

Describing the initiative as an integral part of its “green agenda”, the new tool is part of a wider Clean and Green project that also includes the launch of the company’s Eco Gecko website, which provides information about the company’s green projects.

KnowledgeTree to Offer Integrated Kofax Document Capture Capabilities

KnowledgeTree to Offer Integrated Kofax Document Capture Capabilities Open source document management vendor KnowledgeTree (news, site) has just taken another step forward with its software by getting together with one of its resellers -- Red Eagle Consulting -- to develop a Kofax Capture Release Script that will enable users to bulk scan documents into KnowledgeTree repositories.

KnowledgeTree's Green Initiative, Plants a Tree for A New Sale

knowledgetree_logo_2009.jpg With all the fuss about document management and the great things that document management software can do for the environment, it’s a bit surprising that more companies haven’t launched ‘green’ manifestos to accompany their new releases.

That could be about to change with Knowledge Tree’s (news, site) announcement that it has launched a green IT promotion that will see the company planting a tree in Africa for every new sale over US $4500.

Each planted tree will be documented with a certificate issued to customers outlining the details of their contribution.

That is not to say that you may wake up some morning to find KnowledgeTree CEO Daniel Chalef digging holes in your back yard to plant trees personally. It just means that the company will be sponsoring the climate change and sustainable development organization Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) to do it for them.

While some cynics will have, no doubt, already written this off as pure PR, there’s really no need to as KnowledgeTree has already acknowledged that it is PR, but also conforms with their concept of paperless and sustainable offices.

Keep in mind that PR it may be, but it will still see KnowledgeTree responsible for planting more trees in Africa and other developing regions. And that is a good thing.

And speaking of KnowledgeTree, while version 3.7 of KnowledgeTree’s on-the-premise commercial edition is due to land between now and the end of the year, there is still no official touchdown date.

KnowledgeTree Goes to Zend for CMS Performance Zen

KnowledgeTree Turns to Zend for Better Performance Zen

Well, if it isn’t open source CMS and PHP companies playing friendly again… Open source, PHP5-fueled Enterprise CMS vendor KnowledgeTree (news, site) announced its embrace of the PHP-driven Zend Technologies (news, site) in a partnership that aims to increase speed and performance of KnowledgeTree’s products.

Part of the partnership revolves around the forthcoming version 3.7 of KnowledgeTree’s on-the-premise commercial edition (due in Q4 2009) being deployed on Zend Server.

Looking for instant gratification? According to Philip Arkcoll, product manager at KnowledgeTree, the Zend partnership “represents the coming together of two PHP players whose goal is bringing enterprise-grade PHP products to the marketplace. KnowledgeTree on Zend Server delivers speed, performance, and reliability, particularly in Windows environments. In fact, early tests show response time improvements of close to 40% when using Zend Server, and that’s with no changes to our application.” No word on how Linux behaves, but the vendor say this OS is supported as well.

With KnowledgeTree’s main focus on document management, you may want to consider that KnowledgeTree gets a boosted infrastructure (and, supposedly, less support costs) offering with Zend. Think of code acceleration and caching that can help improve performance and lower resource utilization for your web applications.

Yes, it does look like you do have to buy a Zend Server license to get all that high-performance zen.

Document Management Vendor KnowledgeTree Embraces CMIS

Document Management Vendor KnowledgeTree Embraces CMIS

CMIS, in its current state, seems to be best suited for document management scenarios. Hence, it was only a matter of time before a DMS vendor like KnowledgeTree (news, site) jumped on the CMIS bandwagon (joining the many Web and Enterprise CMS players) and released its own implementation of the draft Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) specification.

Admittedly, quite a timely move, considering that the latest OASIS CMIS Technical Committee face-to-face meeting took place only two weeks ago, getting CMIS an inch closer to the actual standard level.
