Gartner ECM MQ's Challengers, Niche Players and Visionaries

2014-7-october-visionary.jpg

What’s the difference between a Gartner Magic Quadrant (MQ) Leader and Challenger? A Challenger and a Niche Player? A Leader and a Visionary?

These may sound like trick questions or something for which you have to do homework.  But relax … Gartner did the research and we’ve got the answers. So if you’re interested in how enterprise content management (ECM) vendors rate in this year’s MQ, and what that might mean, read on.

Enterprise Search Doesn't Fit in a 2-D Box

2014-14-August-Magic.jpgGartner's been getting a bit of attention lately. The Gartner Enterprise Search Magic Quadrant released in July resulted in criticism from Miles Kehoe, Stephen Arnold and Charlie Hull. Nuix heavily criticized the MQ on e-Discovery and Scott Liewehr has reservations about the Forrester Wave on Digital Experience Delivery Platforms. And now the lawsuit.

My own views on the Gartner Search MQ were a little less forthright. However the Search MQ raises issues which are much wider than whether the companies in the top right hand quadrant (Leaders) deserve to be there.

File Share Won't Solve Enterprise Content Management Problems

The fragmenting Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems market has file share vendors eager to take the place of production-ready ECM suites. But agile and effective as they may be, file share applications fall flat when compared with an Enterprise CMS for securely managing content.

Gartner MQ for Enterprise GRC: EMC, IBM, SAP, Software AG Among Leaders

Last week we saw in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Governance, Risk and Compliance (EGRC) that the rise of social computing and the use of the enormous datasets that it throws up, means that big data and the ability to take meaning from big data is set to transform the market over the next 3 years. It also shows that there are a large number of vendors that are ready for the challenges that this poses.

Gartner MQ for Enterprise GRC: Big Data Analytics To Respond To Social Risk

Now in its 9th year, the Garter MQ for Enterprise Governance, Risk and Compliance Platforms is one of the most dynamic there is. While enterprises always expected a wide range of capabilities across these platforms to monitor risk and business performance, the rise of social computing and the datasets that this throws up, means that big data is also entering the mix and is set to transform the market over the next 3 years.

Gartner MQ for ECM: EMC, IBM, Microsoft Lead, Vendors Prioritize Cloud, Mobile

Only a week after Forrester’s Wave for Enterprise CMS, Gartner has published its Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management. If the Wave describes a market that is healthy but segmenting, Gartner describes one that is growing with vendors forced to cater to demands for mobile and cloud capabilities as well as functionality for specific verticals.

video content management, gartner magic quadrant, videoOf all media types, video can be the most complex to manage and the most difficult to quickly digest, but, for the appropriate purposes, it can also be the most effective. A new Magic Quadrant report from Gartner looks at the vendors who offer enterprise video management.

Gartner MQ For Horizontal Portals: OpenText, Red Hat Challenge, But Adobe, Salesforce Have Vision

Last week we took a first look at Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals and saw that if there appears to be little movement in the placement of vendors in each Quadrant, there are substantial changes in the market. Today, we take a look outside the Leaders’ Quadrant to see who is making it, and in what way.

Gartner MQ For Horizontal Portals: IBM, Microsoft, Oracle Lead + 8 Emerging Trends

A quick look back at Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals over the past two years compared with this year’s Magic Quadrant seems to point to a stagnant market. However, while IBM, Liferay ,Microsoft, Oracle and SAP still dominate the Leaders’ Quadrant, there are subtle shifts in emphasis across the entire Magic Quadrant that are being precipitated by customer demand for more agile and cloud-based portals.

Gartner Campaign Management MQ: SAP Challenges, Sitecore, ExactTarget, Adobe Impress

If the Leader’s Quadrant in Gartner’s Multichannel Campaign Management Magic Quadrant (MCCM) is unchanged since last year, there are still some very impressive offerings in the other quadrants.

In the first part of an examination of Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Multi-channel Campaign Management (MCCM) for 2013, we saw that the market is characterized by a re-architecting of platforms by established vendors and the addition of new functionality by the newer ones. However, even with the new functionalities and cloud offerings, the new entrants still didn't impact on the Leaders Quadrant consisting of IBM, Oracle (Seibel), SAS and Teradata.
