Gartner's been getting a bit of attention lately. The Gartner Enterprise Search Magic Quadrant released in July resulted in criticism from Miles Kehoe, Stephen Arnold and Charlie Hull. Nuix heavily criticized the MQ on e-Discovery and Scott Liewehr has reservations about the Forrester Wave on Digital Experience Delivery Platforms. And now the lawsuit.
My own views on the Gartner Search MQ were a little less forthright. However the Search MQ raises issues which are much wider than whether the companies in the top right hand quadrant (Leaders) deserve to be there.

Last week we saw in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Governance, Risk and Compliance (EGRC) that the rise of social computing and the use of the enormous datasets that it throws up, means that big data and the ability to take meaning from big data is set to transform the market over the next 3 years. It also shows that there are a large number of vendors that are ready for the challenges that this poses.

Now in its 9th year, the Garter MQ for Enterprise Governance, Risk and Compliance Platforms is one of the most dynamic there is. While enterprises always expected a wide range of capabilities across these platforms to monitor risk and business performance, the rise of social computing and the datasets that this throws up, means that big data is also entering the mix and is set to transform the market over the next 3 years.

Only a week after Forrester’s Wave for Enterprise CMS, Gartner has published its Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management. If the Wave describes a market that is healthy but segmenting, Gartner describes one that is growing with vendors forced to cater to demands for mobile and cloud capabilities as well as functionality for specific verticals.

A quick look back at Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals over the past two years compared with this year’s Magic Quadrant seems to point to a stagnant market. However, while IBM, Liferay ,Microsoft, Oracle and SAP still dominate the Leaders’ Quadrant, there are subtle shifts in emphasis across the entire Magic Quadrant that are being precipitated by customer demand for more agile and cloud-based portals.

If the Leader’s Quadrant in Gartner’s Multichannel Campaign Management Magic Quadrant (MCCM) is unchanged since last year, there are still some very impressive offerings in the other quadrants.

In the first part of an examination of Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Multi-channel Campaign Management (MCCM) for 2013, we saw that the market is characterized by a re-architecting of platforms by established vendors and the addition of new functionality by the newer ones. However, even with the new functionalities and cloud offerings, the new entrants still didn't impact on the Leaders Quadrant consisting of IBM, Oracle (Seibel), SAS and Teradata.
