WordPress 2.6 Released Early

The battle of the open source CMS continues. Well some might not consider it a battle, but there is a definite push to stay at the top by the leaders of the pack. WordPress is no slouch where that is concerned. In the news again, WordPress announced the release of version 2.6 -- a month ahead of their original schedule no less.

Blogit for the iPhone

Micro-blogging is getting a bit of a lift today as Six Apart announces a new application – well, new to the iPhone at least. Six Apart’s BlogIt application for Facebook is now available for the Apple iPhone. Is this just the beginning of a long line of applications that will propel us forever into the world of twitter-dom?

Blogging is a great way to be social online, to extend your influence and to build community. Most of you already know these things. But we're all busy people and this is a rapidly evolving sphere. So the following question is nearly always pertinent and worth revisiting: Are you using your blog most effectively?

Movable Type 4.15 Publishing Platform

Originally scheduled for release Monday May 19, the newest release of Movable Type v4.15 is now planned for Wednesday May 28, 2008. Why the delay? They say all will become clear on release day. Until then, here are the enhancements in store for all you Movable Type users.

YouPublish content portal

Just a few weeks after private file sharing service drop.io was opened up to the public, another file sharing service, called YouPublish has been announced. Since we like file sharing and we like drop.io, we were interested to see what this new service had to offer and what makes it different from drop.io.

WordCamp for WordPress

Remember when you were a kid and you spent the summer at camp, lying in the sun, hiking, grilling and just plain having fun? Or maybe you just wished you were one of those kids.

Here's a camp that doesn't have the sunbathing, hiking or grilling. No, this camp is nothing like that at all. This is WordCamp. And the fun? Well, that's completely up to you.

Blogging has been around for some time now, but there is a new aspect of blogging that is on the rise across the web. That aspect is microblogging. Much like the advent of text messaging, microblogging is taking the idea of being connected to the next level and sweeping the world over.

Six Apart, Apperceptive, Six Apart Media

Six Apart has just announced the creation of Six Apart Media and Six Apart Services divisions. The real news here is the Media bit. The Media operation is an advertising network -- not unlike Federated Media -- that will open up to participation from some percentage of the blogosphere, regardless of what technology the typing monkeys are using. As part of the news, 6A have nabbed NYC-based consultancy, Apperceptive. The acquisition forms the basis of Six Apart Services, which is really not about traditional consulting services, rather it's about helping bloggers monetize and grow their properties, while 6A Media gets a long term cut.

Hey, hey, look what they've done...it's Vox flipped inside out.

Movable Type, Blogging, Forums

Movable Type, on it's trek towards full fledged CMS'ness, just got a little closer. Today saw Mark Carey's announcement of MT Forum -- a MT add-on module which delivers fully functional forums that are loosely based on the behavior of the popular phpBB system.

Does this addition bump the MT Community Solution -- the other way to build forums with MT -- off the table? Let's have a look.

Compendiums top 10 blogging trends

Compendium Blogware is a Software as a Service, organization-oriented blogging platform. This means that it concentrates on SEO, customer relationships and sales conversion, and incorporates administration features like editorial controls, restricting employees from posting anything they shouldn't.

The makers of Compendium held a webinar last week, in which co-founder Chris Baggot offered some advice to organizations regarding blogging for the coming months:

Movable Type 4 Publishing Platform

The gang at Six Apart has just announced a new extension for their Movable Type 4.1 Commercial and Open Source publishing platforms. It's called the the Action Streams Plugin and by tying together data from all manner of social networking providers it moves you one step closer to the open social web dream.

Movable Type 4.1 Open Source Stable

It's official, Moveable Type Open Source (MTOS) 4.1 Stable has been released to the market.

We've been keeping you up to date about MTOS since we heard about it in August. In December we gave you an overview of the new open source version.

It was just last week that MT4.1 RC1 was released. So the guys and gals over at Six Apart are moving fast.

You've all heard the news by now that Sun went out and snapped up MySQL for a hefty $1 billion. Yes, that's right...turned the open source community on it's ear...or did it?

So...what do you think about the Sun/MySQL deal? Reckon it's good for open source in general? Does it affect your orientation towards MySQL? What about the price? Are they nuts?

That's exactly what we asked a bundle of the movers and shakers around the open source CMS community. And they were mostly upbeat about the deal.

Which is great, but...boy, how we would have loved someone to come out guns-a-blazing against those Sun guys, or MySQL, and given us some controversy or blackmail material. Next time we do this, we'll get them on the sause first.

It was a gray winter morning in CMSland and here's how we decided to spend it: we packed down a block of fresh soda bread and headed over to Chez Technorati to have a gander at their 100 most linked-to (popular) blogs. With that list in hand we skipped about through viewed source, many emails and some kindly conversation. In the end we had ourselves a nifty little list consisting of website name and the blogging technology or Web CMS platform said site ran on.

Simply put, we found that WordPress dominates the list, that Movable Type comes in with a respectable second, and the rest are either custom jobbies or a smattering of other platforms which are, relatively speaking, eating dust. We enclose the full list here for your consideration, but first a couple of notes on the results.
