Microsoft Commercial Business Thrives, But Ballmer Still Remains a Question

Microsoft's sales and profits are up. In the first quarter since the company announced a major reorganization and shared the news that CEO Steve Ballmer is retiring, the Redmond, Wash.-based technology giant reported a jump of 17 percent in net income in the fiscal first quarter to $5.2 billion or 62 cents per share.

While the company's commercial wing grew revenues by 10 percent to $11.2 billion, consumer revenues, including devices, grew only 4 percent to $7.46 billion.

Windows 8.1 RT Upgrade Pulled as Microsoft Addresses a 'Situation'

Microsoft pulled a version of its Windows 8.1 update from the Microsoft Store over the weekend following complaints "from a limited number of users."

Some people who installed the Windows RT operating system (OS) update on their tablet computers experienced boot configuration data errors, which resulted in that infamous Blue Screen of Death.

Microsoft, which described the situation as "temporary,"  issued a Surface RT recovery image today to address some of the Windows RT 8.1 update issues.

Google Sells More Ads Quicker in Q3

If Google has been struggling to find a solution to falling mobile advertising prices, it appears to have found a solution this quarter: sell more ads and sell them quicker. It may seem simple, but it has taken Google a while to come up with it. The result is a spectacular 12 percent rise in revenues to $14.9 billion year-over-year, with profits close to $3 billion -- and a promise of more to come in future quarters.
