What do you get when you put document management, collaboration and business processes together? You get a half decent enterprise content management system. Really, you can't one without the other these days.

It's just about the end of August and time for the gears to shift up one. This week, there have been a number of new releases that have focused principally on getting SharePoint 2010-ready. O3Spaces has also been busy, this time adding Linux support.

While document management, and more generally enterprise content management, have made strides in the past year, many companies are still fighting to management their content. Oracle has improved its document management capabilities by upgrading Documaker for insurance.

Dutch-based O3Spaces BV (news, site) has just released the latest version of its document management system and with it continues the development of a product that the company says is a real and viable alternative to SharePoint.

For anyone following us here, this would not be the first time that a company made similar claims. However, the company is not claiming to have the weight to replace the Microsoft heavyweight, just that it is a viable alternative to people looking for a document collaboration system, and an open source one at that.

The kicker is that it provides tight integration of its collaborative abilities into OpenOffice.org, StarOffice and MS Office.

Brava! Alfresco Labs 3 is striving to be a viable open source alternative to Microsoft’s SharePoint MOSS enterprise content management offering.

As of today, Alfresco Labs v3 — the application formerly known as Alfresco Community — offers potential SharePoint customers a different option, providing them with what they claim is the first fully-compatible open source SharePoint repository.

Gouda in the Netherlands is well known for its delicious cheese, and, in the world of content management systems, Gouda is also known for O3Spaces, a fairly young, upbeat company known for its groupware for education and industry.

O3Spaces has just released the latest version of their Document Management and Document Collaboration suite O3Spaces Workplace 2.2.1.

In a match made somewhere near heaven O3Spaces, B.V. — the open source challenger to Microsoft SharePoint and provider of the O3Spaces Workplace Collaboration platform — and Linux distro vendor Xandros have announced an agreement to provide OpenDocument and MS Office document collaboration, management and retention services for the forthcoming release of Xandros Server 2.0 Standard Edition.

O3Spaces targets SharePoint, whilst Xandros chips away at Windows Server and Windows XP sales.

Hoping to level the playing field with Microsoft SharePoint and perhaps make a little open source cheddar, Dutch software outfit O3 is releasing its O3Spaces back office suite for OpenOffice and StarOffice. While it is far from offering all of the features of SharePoint (MOSS) 2007, it is definitely something that that open source and hybrid Microsoft/open source shops should consider for document management.
