Wendell Challenger is an "uber bike geek" and a graduate-level science student studying topics related to evolution. He's also one of the volunteer writers and photographers for Momentum Magazine, a free bi-monthly publication for urban cyclists available in twenty cities in the US and Canada.

When it was decided to build Momentum's, um, momentum, by bringing its free content onto the Web, Challenger took on the project. Free and open source seemed a no-brainer between his scientific background and the free, community nature of the magazine. At Open Web Vancouver 2009 (news, site) he shared his experience.

We caught up with their EVP of Marketing and Business Development, Peter Vescuso, to discuss the implications for the Content Management Systems community.

Many things happened at Drupalcon DC, the annual conference for the open source web content management platform. There were sessions, BOFs, parties, shirts, keynotes, zoo tours, sandwiches and frankly we probably don't want to know what else.

But for anyone who came to Drupal (news,site) new and lost and tried to use its documentation, something truly wonderful happened too. Jose Zamora from the Knight Foundation announced that, among other things, the Drupal documentation team got the funding they had requested from the Knight Drupal Initiative (KDI).

Long known as an open source web content management system, Drupal (news, site) has also recently been referring to their solution as social publishing software. Most web content management systems have some sort of social computing capabilities built-in now -- it's almost mandatory these days.

It hasn't exactly been clear though how you use Drupal to create social computing solutions, until now. Packt Publishing has come out with a new book in their Drupal series that teaches us just that -- how to build social networking sites with Drupal.
