This week in GRC was always going to be about LegalTech and everything that came out of it. Well, it's finishing up today, and it didn’t disappoint. There were releases from Autonomy, Recommind, Digital Reef and a whole lot more.

As we enter day two of LegalTech New York 2012, legal professionals are getting hands-on practical information for improving their law practice management, thanks in part to vendors that are using the conference as an opportunity to launch new products.

Working well together is a skill that most of us learned in kindergarten. However, for IT and legal departments, it’s a skill that they are still learning to master. But according to Recommind’s third annual survey on the working relationship between corporate IT and legal departments, the two departments are getting better about working together.

New devices, new problems. If you haven’t guessed, we’re talking mobile devices and problems with the management of enterprise content that having a scattered workforce involves. Add to that all the unstructured data that comes in through email, and you’ve got double trouble. Recommind (news, site) is offering a solution to this with the v3.6 release of its Decisiv Email software.

In March, we told you about Recommind’s new predictive coding website, which provides online resources dedicated to explaining and demonstrating Recommind’s predictive coding capabilities for expedited document review. This week, Recommind received a patent for its predictive coding process, a move that gives Recommind, its customers and its partners exclusive rights to use, host and sell systems and processes for iterative, computer-expedited document review.

This week, we get a brief glimpse of the new document features that will be appearing with the Windows Phone Mango update later this month, First to File gets US$ 2 million to develop its cloud strategy, Recommind shows that email management is a sore point at least in the UK, DSS buys ExtraDev and Motive Systems changes its name.

Just as Recommind’s most recent partnership with LexisNexis aims to unite legal and IT departments, this week, Recommind seeks to connect the enterprise to cloud-based services with the release of Decisiv Search 7.1.

If ever there was an enterprise inter-department flashpoint, it must be the one at the juncture of IT and legal departments, where e-Discovery requests and technical capabilities meet. To defuse potential problems and make e-Discovery easier, Recommind (news, site) and LexisNexis have formed a partnership that will offer Recommind’s hosted e-Discovery review platform with LexisNexis Hosted Litigation Solutions.

For those involved in the document review process, a few recent announcements from the e-Discovery industry may provide ways to speed up, enhance and otherwise streamline your approach.

This week from a GRC perspective was always going to be about announcements from the International Legal Technology Association’s (ILTA) conference in Las Vegas that runs until tomorrow. Nearly everyone is there including Autonomy, Open Text, IBM and Recommind. But there are others too and we’ll catch up with them next week.

In preparation for the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) annual conference next week, many legal technology vendors are releasing, launching and announcing a variety of products and related news. Among them is Recommind, provider of accurate and automated enterprise search, automatic classification and eDiscovery software, whose latest news doesn’t concern a new product release, but rather their relevancy to the marketplace.

It’s no secret that the relationship between corporate IT and legal departments isn’t as cohesive as it should be. A recent survey released by Recommind, a leader in search-powered information risk management (IRM) software, revealed that a lack of collaboration between both teams was greatly hindering e-Discovery efforts.

Going back to January this year, research by CMS Watch showed that despite improvements in SharePoint search, Microsoft–focused organizations were still looking for specialist search solutions. Reccommind (news, site) seems to understand this and with its upgraded enterprise search solution Mindserver 7.0, users will be able to search SharePoint 2010.

In its recent research, CMS Watch (news, site) found that enterprise search buyers are increasingly turning to specialized search vendors, as they struggle to find the right solution.

CMS Watch's Search & Information Access subscription service shows specialized focus in specific environments (Microsoft, SAP, Oracle) or verticals (e.g. Recommind in legal sector).

While evaluating 23 enterprise search vendors (10- to 18-page comparative evaluations per each), the researchers also found that:

• Despite improvements in SharePoint search, Microsoft-focused organizations are still considering other alternatives (Coveo, SurfRay or ISYS).
• Rapidly growing repositories are making enterprise search harder.
• Larger vendors struggle to keep up with specialized search vendors (Sinequa, dtSearch and Vivisimo), who are quickly releasing connectors to various repositories.

The updated Search & Information Access report also looks into FAST, SharePoint search in 2010, Autonomy’s IDOL platform, open source Apache Lucene and Solr, and offers an updated industry "cross-check" chart with 2010 product developments and vendor changes.
