Web Publishing Roll Up: Increasing Prices, Online Presence

This week in Web Publishing brings us some sage advice, courtesy of ReadWriteWeb COO, Bernard Lunn.

He encourages bloggers and journalists to look optimistically to the future, rid ourselves of all the bad elements of what weighs the publishing industry down and keep the parts that make up happy -- namely a strong desire to find the truth, among others.

He also recommends evaluating the reasons we rely and respect true journalism and ultimately accept that it costs money. "Until we as an industry can do a better job at monetizing quality at correlating quality with revenue," Lunn says "the sensible business decision is simply to go after page views, any page views."

Naturally, after the birth of and bandwagon jumping between those three players, a social network platform boom happened, with products of all shapes and sizes. Today you can say: “I want a micro social network for my business” and we’d suggest Plum as the way to go.

You could even hint at how you’ve been itching for a network based on your creepy love for bellybutton lint and we’d tell you (gingerly) to go make one and bond with other lint lovers using Ning. And now, thanks to a Stockholm-based company called FileRide, you can even dream of social networks for inanimate things like the files on your computer, and we’d still be able to point you in the right direction.

Interim Results Show Day is Having a Good Year

Day Software Reports Interim Q3 2008 Results

Mere days before the long-anticipated CQ5 release, Day presents interim financial results for Q3 2008.

The very Web 2.0-esque CQ5 is currently scheduled to be generally available on November 17. We will tell you more about CQ5 next week (downloading the software for evaluation as we speak).

In the meantime, let’s count Day’s Swiss francs. The company reports increased revenue and presses ahead with market expansion, mainly in Northern Europe.

Overall revenue for the first nine months of 2008 increased by 9% to CHF 20.0 million compared to CHF 18.3 million in the same period last year. Overall revenue increased by 16% compared with the second quarter of 2008.

Revenue from licenses for the nine months until September 30, 2008, amounted to CHF 7.8 million compared to CHF 6.7 million for the same period last year.

Losses were reduced to CHF 524,000 compared to the previous quarter. The technical efforts poured into CQ5 were a cost factor. The cash reserves increased to CHF 16.2 million.

Day’s senior management welcomed new members, including Richard Francis as new CFO and Kevin Cochrane as new CMO.

While everything on Day’s side seems to be quite optimistic at the moment, we will continue to watch the company and report the news to you.

Gartner Foresees Growth in ECM Lead by Big Blue

Gartner, everyone’s favourite research firm, has read the ECM tea leaves and expects its global market to grow at a rate of 12 percent per year. If that growth rate holds true, by 2010 the worldwide market for content management will be valued at a whopping US$ 4.2 billion.
