Acquia (news, site) -- providers of commercial support and hosting for the Drupal Web CMS, and Ruby on Rails platform-as-a-service (PaaS) Engine Yard (news, site) have announced a partnership to offer a managed cloud-based solution for Ruby on Rails (RoR). The partnership should allow developers who use the popular Drupal web content management system and RoR to create solutions more quickly.

Webiva is yet another content management system that aims to give the likes of WordPress, Joomla and Drupal some competition. The difference? In addition to being an open source, Ruby on Rails system, Webiva comes packed with a SaaS hosting platform that cuts out a ton of management hassle. 

Two technologies that many sites and services rely on these days are web applications and search. Those relying heavily on web apps plus Apache Lucene (news, site) and Apache Solr (news, site) now have a new tool available to help them track down and identify performance problems within their sites, thanks to a company called New Relic.

When you look at the open source content management systems out there today, you'll find a ton written in PHP, some written in Perl and Java, and a small collection written in Python.

Open Text Corp one of Enterprise Content Management's (ECM) heavyweight vendors has announced the Livelink ECM Platform (note the word "platform").

The the new offering is described as a secure, integrated framework that combines a shared content repository with user, content, and process services in a service-oriented architecture (SOA).

As ECM365 recently editor James Brown recently noted, Open Text is all about "bigness". The platform, touts a shared repository and shared services. It provides the full range of ECM services: Collaboration, Documents, Web Content, E-mail Management, and ERP.

Bigness it may be. The vision is one of SOA as the lion tamer.
