It was classic Larry Ellison on stage, part brilliant computer scientist, part hammy comedian, always entertaining.

Oracle OpenWorld, his company's mammoth annual convention that virtually shuts down the heart of San Francisco's SoMa district, will continue through tomorrow.

But Ellison's keynote presentation yesterday pretty much solidified the intended message for the capacity crowd: Oracle, which trailed its rivals to the cloud, now wants to be king of the cumulous.

What SAP Gets With Its $8.3 Billion Acquisition of Concur

SAP's acquisition of Concur Technologies expands its cloud network, gives it access to another large list of customers and keeps it competitive with Oracle and IBM, analysts told CMSWire.

SAP announced last week it had acquired the Bellevue, Wash.,-based business travel management software provider that will beef up its HANA platform.

The estimated $8.3 billion deal brings Walldorf, Germany-based SAP 23,000 customers and 4,200 employees, according to a letter to customers from the SAP Global Managing Board. SAP is led by CEO Bill McDermott, and Concur's chief is Steve Singh.

"The end game for SAP, as shown by its acquisition of SuccessFactors and now Concur, is to assemble a big portfolio of horizontal cloud business services useful to many customers," said Ted Schadler, vice president and principal analyst for Forrester Research.

SAP announced it has acquired a business travel management software provider that will beef up its HANA platform.

It will acquire Bellevue, Wash.,-based Concur Technologies for an estimated $8.3 billion. Concur comes with 23,000 customers and 4,200 employees, according to a letter to customers from the SAP Global Managing Board.

SAP officials said this supports the SAP "run simple" plan for business software.

In this case we’re talking about delivery on the Stinger initiative, which teamed engineers from Hadoop distro provider Hortonworks with more than 140 developers to advance interactive SQL querying ability on Apache Hive at scale in pure open source.

The initiative, which was completed in April, brought together over 390,000 lines of code contributed by developers from 44 companies, to provide business analysts and data workers with one powerful engine for SQL queries on big data sets at speed and at petabyte scale.

It does something that other big data solutions like it do not do: it gives users a single, simple tool to use for either interactive or batch processing.

Adoption and ROI are difficult areas to define, measure and implement. The Altimeter Group released a report on The Evolution of Social Business detailing how organizations that have implemented social have created technology silos and lack clear focus or strategy in how it should be deployed across the enterprise.

As social has become mainstream over the past few years, we have seen major software vendors across vertical markets and solution types integrate social into the fabric of their core products. Dion Hinchcliffe highlighted this trend in 2011 in his blog post “Putting Social to Work,” where he described the integration of social with ERP suites like Oracle, IBM, Salesforce, Microsoft and SAP.

In its first Forrester Wave for Digital Experience Delivery Platforms, released today, analysts said no vendor offers a truly "end-to-end solution."

"Overall completeness and adoption" in this space is "middling," according to analysts.

Unified platforms are "more myth than reality," they wrote in the Wave.

Despite no leader, Forrester did cite Adobe and hybris (SAP) as "pioneers" that offer the most complete options while IBM and Sitecore "aren't far behind."

SAP HANA seems to have taken a bit of a public beating lately, namely because its creator, Vishal Sikka, and several other notable executives left the company.

And while some might speculate the Guinness World Record setting in-memory database has had its best days, there are very few facts to support that contention. In fact, we say the best may be yet to come.

After all, SAP HANA hasn’t yet infiltrated most Enterprises and SAP, as a whole, has become no holds barred, cloud-bound only lately.

These Trends are Driving Structured Data Archiving

The growing use of Apache Hadoop, increasing data warehouse volume sizes and the accumulation of legacy systems in organizations are all factors fostering structured data growth. To manage it, organizations are being forced to look at data archiving and how to get non essential data out of mainstream enterprise applications.

The findings appear in Gartner’s first Magic Quadrant for Structured Data Archiving. This is the first time that Gartner has produced such a Magic Quadrant, which features 13 vendors in total including the four leaders.

While many enterprises are yet to embrace data migration and archiving, Gartner estimates that migration will represent about 20 percent of all information governance projects. To help enterprises do this, four vendors have emerged as the leaders in the archiving space: HP, IBM, Informatics, and Solix.

You know how these things start. Someone hears something from someone who heard it from someone else.

Suddenly, you have a major story. Maybe.

The current something that is doing the rounds since late last night is that Oracle is in discussions with Micros Systems with a view to taking over the Point-of-Sale (POS) vendor for… wait for it … $5 billion.

If this comes to pass, it will be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, acquisition in terms of price this year. Again, its only rumors so far and there’s a long way to go before it’s a done deal.

Breaking News: Vishal Sikka Grabs Infosys' Top Job

Did we call it or what?

Vishal Sikka just confirmed via Twitter that he will be leading Infosys into the future.

The Stanford PhD who, up until early last month, was an executive member of SAP’s Board and is widely credited for bringing Guinness World record breaking database SAP HANA to life, has now accepted the challenge of leading Infosys, the $31.1 billion global provider of business consulting, information technology, software engineering and outsourcing to a new level of greatness.

Sikka will be the Infosys’ first non-founder CEO.

How to Get Value from Your Business Data

Here's an interesting concept to consider: If 80 percent of the data your enterprise is using was created in the past year, it means your enterprise is created four times more data in the past year than in its entire history before then.

That’s pretty good, right? Sure it is ... but only if you can get useful business insights from that data.

So how do you do that? Southard Jones, vice president of product strategy at Birst, is unambiguous about it. You need to focus on the business user, he said.
