Smaller Firms Nip at the Big Dogs in Gartner's Portal MQ

Gartner cited six trends in its Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portals, including a convergence of portal and Web Content Management (Web CMS) needs across enterprises. In addition, long-time traditional, portal vendors and their bloated, unwieldy architectures are losing ground to smaller, lighter portal vendors.

As evidence of both trends, just look at the companies who made it into this year's MQ: Ektron, Jahia, Sitecore, Squiz and WordPress.

SAP CEO Boasts 'We're Better than Everyone Else'

Bill McDermott made one thing very clear in SAP's third-quarter earnings call this morning: SAP is better than everyone else.

Better than Oracle. Better than Salesforce. Better than Workday. Even better than Facebook, Ikea, Amazon, eBay and Alibaba.

The CEO's confidence is based on SAP's progress in the cloud, which he said allows businesses run their entire production engines. Competitors merely offer "point solutions," he claimed.

The Walldorf, Germany-based software giant saw cloud revenues climb 41 percent this quarter year-over-year, and its customer count in its business suite on HANA jumped from 450 to 1,450 this quarter in the same period.

Never missing an opportunity to cite a competitor's inferiority, McDermott said that's "more than Workday's total number of customers."

6 Trends Dominate the Portal Space, Gartner Claims

In recent weeks we have spent a lot of time talking about data search and discovery. While there are many ways of finding content, access through portals is still one of the major pathways. This week, Gartner has published what it believes are the top horizontal portal vendors in a market that is changing rapidly.

While there are many trends in play, one of the most notable, Gartner noted, is convergence of Web Content Management (WCM) demands through lean portals that are also incorporating social technologies in the enterprise.

Just a day after the SAP-IBM cloud partnership news broke, an international standard setting body issued two standards related to cloud computing.

Perhaps CEOs Ginni Rometty of IBM and Bill McDermott of SAP should take note.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) today released what officials there call "ground-breaking standards" that "lay down the basic terminology and architectural framework" for cloud computing.

The cloud "poses many issues, chiefly related to compatibility," ISO's Vivienne Rojas blogged today. "With more and more providers offering cloud-based services, the technology has suffered from chaotic development, making it almost impossible for companies to ascertain the quality of services offered."

SAP, IBM Steal Salesforce's Thunder

It wasn't if, but when. Who would try to steal the thunder from Salesforce and its Dreamforce glory?

It was SAP. And IBM. Together.

The enterprise software giants joined forces today.  SAP announced its HANA Enterprise Cloud service is now available through IBM’s cloud in a move officials from each company claim expands major markets with the addition of the IBM cloud data centers. 

Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP, said in a statement the demand for SAP HANA and SAP Business Suite on SAP HANA in the cloud is "tremendous and this global agreement with IBM heralds a new era of cloud collaboration."

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty called it a "significant milestone in the deployment of enterprise cloud” and added that IBM's "secure, open, hybrid enterprise cloud platform will enable SAP clients to support new ways to work in an era shaped by big data, mobile and social.”

What SAP Gets With Its $8.3 Billion Acquisition of Concur

SAP's acquisition of Concur Technologies expands its cloud network, gives it access to another large list of customers and keeps it competitive with Oracle and IBM, analysts told CMSWire.

SAP announced last week it had acquired the Bellevue, Wash.,-based business travel management software provider that will beef up its HANA platform.

The estimated $8.3 billion deal brings Walldorf, Germany-based SAP 23,000 customers and 4,200 employees, according to a letter to customers from the SAP Global Managing Board. SAP is led by CEO Bill McDermott, and Concur's chief is Steve Singh.

"The end game for SAP, as shown by its acquisition of SuccessFactors and now Concur, is to assemble a big portfolio of horizontal cloud business services useful to many customers," said Ted Schadler, vice president and principal analyst for Forrester Research.

SAP announced it has acquired a business travel management software provider that will beef up its HANA platform.

It will acquire Bellevue, Wash.,-based Concur Technologies for an estimated $8.3 billion. Concur comes with 23,000 customers and 4,200 employees, according to a letter to customers from the SAP Global Managing Board.

SAP officials said this supports the SAP "run simple" plan for business software.

In this case we’re talking about delivery on the Stinger initiative, which teamed engineers from Hadoop distro provider Hortonworks with more than 140 developers to advance interactive SQL querying ability on Apache Hive at scale in pure open source.

The initiative, which was completed in April, brought together over 390,000 lines of code contributed by developers from 44 companies, to provide business analysts and data workers with one powerful engine for SQL queries on big data sets at speed and at petabyte scale.

It does something that other big data solutions like it do not do: it gives users a single, simple tool to use for either interactive or batch processing.
