With Oracle and SAP pitted against each other and Oracle turning in some impressive results for Q3 in September, everyone was waiting to see what SAP’s figures would produce. The figures show a profit after tax of US$ 697 million (€501 million), up 12% from Q3 last year, along with a few noteworthy comments.

For those looking to develop and implement horizontal portals, Gartner has recently published its Magic Quadrant report, which amongst other things, shows that with a shift towards Web 2.0, cloud and consumer facing portals, the number of viable vendors has dropped from more than 50 in 2003 to less than a dozen in 2010.

For SMB’s this week there were a number of new releases that should make it easier to work while mobile. Apart from a mobile Business By Design from SAP, Skype is now available to a limited extent on Android v2.1 and above. IBM has also been busy with online tax filing and hosted e-mail.

The acquisition of Sybase (news, site) by SAP (news, site) which was first announced in May, has passed the final hurdle after the European Commission gave it regulatory approval on Tuesday evening.
With the deadline for the deal fast approaching, the German software giant extended its offer deadline for its US$ 5.8 billion cash offer for Sybase shares pending approval. With EU approval now in the bag, the deal is due to finally close next Monday.

If there was a certain amount of hand-wringing at this year's IOUG conference over how Sun would integrate into Oracle’s (news, site) portfolio from a technology perspective, from the financial side there were no such discussions. The deal is being cited as one of the principal reasons why the software giant has seen its profits grow by 25% in the fourth quarter.
