Oscar Berg: 'Collaboration Pyramid' Improves Enterprise Communication

2014-6-june-oscar-berg.jpg

Technology can help companies adapt to today's fast-changing landscape, but digital strategist Oscar Berg says firms also must develop a "communication culture" throughout the organization.

Berg, who works with the Avega Group, a consultancy in Malmö, Sweden, discussed the need for greater collaboration during a one-hour CMSWire webinar last week. He explained why businesses should change, how they can change and the technologies that can help them.

Why? Because factors including new consumer behaviors and  rising global competition are making business unpredictable. "This means organizations can't do long, detailed planning. Instead they have to be prepared for change, to quickly adapt to new conditions and situation," he said. "This is quite a challenge."

What Does a Chief Collaboration Officer Do?

2014-05-June-Adkins-Mark.jpgIn my 25 years covering and analyzing the vendors and end users in the collaboration space, I have never run across anyone with the title of Chief Collaboration Officer. Nor do meet many people who have the background in collaboration to support the title.

So what does a Chief Collaboration Officer (CCO) do?

Take that, Cisco: Microsoft is Tops in Enterprise Collaboration

social business, Numbers Proof: Microsoft Beats Cisco in Enterprise Collaboration

Maybe it hasn't reached Red Sox-Tampa Bay Rays level. But Cisco and Microsoft are certainly watching each other in the enterprise collaboration space.

Last month, Cisco told us it was gunning for Microsoft with its Jive integration.

Microsoft then defended its own suite.

Nothing like numbers to clear up the argument -- for now, anyway.

Microsoft has finally caught up with Cisco and generated more revenue from its enterprise collaboration infrastructure activities in the first quarter, according to new data from Synergy Research Group.

Yammer Chats Synced With OneDrive, SharePoint Files

Tossing around a Microsoft Word doc for review via email is a long-gone practice.

Microsoft hopes document collaboration is that much easier in the enterprise with its release today of document conversations, a new enterprise social experience feature applied across Office 365. Microsoft announced the news in a blog post authored by Christophe Fiessinger, a group product manager on the enterprise social team.

Social Ideation Finds Ideas Worth Pursuing

2014-03-June-sticky-notes.jpgKnowledge-based companies have been driving much of the economy, especially in the United States and Europe. Information technology, media, biotech and pharmaceutical, financial services companies and many more are based on the ability to generate good ideas, turn them into technology and, eventually, products. The “business” of these companies is intellectual property (IP) -- basically an idea that has value. Even companies that don’t make money directly on IP have to worry about it.

IP is not only a product idea. It may also be a better way of doing business, a price model that offers a competitive advantage, or a way to achieve operational efficiencies.

Huddle Scores with Williams Lea

Huddle earned an enterprise win for its cloud-based collaboration and content management software. It announced today that Williams Lea, which provides specialized business process outsourcing solutions, added Huddle to its suite of online tools for internal and external collaboration.

Williams Lea plans to use Huddle to promote "greater collaboration and cross-learning" for its global workforce, and provide another way for its employees "to share best practices, success stories and new approaches to projects."

Matt Porter, Group CIO for Williams Lea, noted that Huddle offers the information governance the firm requires with full audit trails that track who has reviewed, commented on and edited files, as well as version controls.

Does a Swedish Company Know the Secret of Intranet Security?

Is there room in the American market for another enterprise social intranet — especially one that could be more secure? Sweden-based Incentive Corp. thinks so.

Incentive claims its network, which can be used on-premises or within the cloud, provides data security within a suite of social collaboration tools.

"Incentive is installed behind the firewall, which means that a company can choose its level of security and privacy," CEO Rickard Hansson told CMSWire. "Incentive doesn't change where you can store documents, [but] just ensures that the communication about those documents and changes made to them remains private."

Companies "know where their data is" when using Incentive, he said, because they don't have to use a public cloud.

Speed Business with Collaboration and Engagement

2014-30-May-Cheetah.jpgI find myself thinking again about the buzziest of buzzwords: engagement and collaboration. Just what do they mean? Engagement is about people’s connections to technology, and collaboration builds connections (and ideas) among people.

You know what engagement really is? It’s speed.

The New Chief Officer No One Wants to Meet

2014-30-May-The-Boss.jpgWe've all met him. You know him. He might be a friend. He's not alone. He might even be you.

He's the guy (sometimes gal, but she's more rare) who walks around and talks about how many people need to get canned if the enterprise is ever going to really start moving. Accountability is his creed (or at least your accountability is).

How Businesses are Benefiting From Social

2014-29-May-Whole-Foods.jpgOne of the biggest topics to emerge from the Microsoft conference circuit this year is the concept of “working like a network” -- encouraging companies to rethink how they operate, collaborate and communicate by using enterprise social technologies to eliminate departmental silos. This allows companies to better adapt and respond to ever-shifting market conditions as well as improve knowledge sharing.

To get a good understanding of what that vision looks like, watch Yammer’s Moments video. It shows how people within a responsive organization used Yammer to collaborate and create a product that made a difference for its customers. The video ends in a new product design job for an administrative coordinator, happy customers who fulfilled their goals, and a warm feeling about the power of enterprise social. This isn’t just marketing hype either: McKinsey & Company recently conducted a survey of leading enterprise companies on the use of social networks, and nearly 90 percent reported a measurable business benefit gained from implementing social platforms.

The Innovation Based Business Case for Social

2014-28-May-First-Flight.jpgIn management science innovation is typically thought of as a process which results in beneficial changes through novel ideas or solutions. Innovation is about change -- and change, volatility and flux have been the defining features of the business landscape since World War II and especially since the 1970s. As one commentator succinctly put it in 1990, organizations must “get innovative or get dead."

Let's examine four ways social business can be associated with innovation and look at the different ways each measures value.
