Amazon Joins Trend of Desktops in the Cloud

Thumbnail image for AWS320240.jpg

Amazon today announced a new cloud-based desktop service that may suit companies where more workers are using their own devices to connect to the enterprise.

Amazon WorkSpaces allows end-users to access their documents or applications remotely from Amazon Web Services (AWS) by both computers and mobile devices, including iOS, Android and Amazon Kindle Fire tablets.

A company's Active Directory can be integrated so users can continue to logon with their work credentials. Including storage, directory access and a desktop, it costs $35 per user per month.

Enterprise Collaboration Tools a 'Must' For Business Success

AIIM lede.jpgMost organizations see collaboration as crucial to their success, but nearly two-thirds of those organizations feel confused about the dovetailing of collaboration and social tools.

And while document and content sharing outside the firewall is considered a necessary evil, many onsite systems have been secured against access to outside systems, forcing business workers to rely on unsecured file sharing systems.

These results and more from recent AIIM research points to a C-Suite that favors collaboration, but puts many obstacles in the way to achieving it.

Thank You, Jive, Let's Get Producteev

ProducteevDomestic task management is hard enough, unless you’re one of those drones who gets a charge from crossing something off of your “honey do” list.

Put yourself in the office where teamwork and collaboration are defaults and keeping track of things — like who’s doing what, where’d you put that, when are you going to finish your part so that I can do mine, what’s the priority — becomes a nightmare.

Or not, if you have Producteev, a social task management solution, offered by Jive.

Cisco, Google Collaborate on Chromebook #EnterpriseCon

rsz_ciscokeynote.jpg

Google and Cisco are putting their enterprise collaboration faith into the little $200 laptop.

Or maybe they're just trying to gang up on Microsoft.

No matter how you slice it, the companies announced today at Enterprise Connect in Orlando a collaboration for collaboration software: the Cisco WebEx experience on Google's Chromebook and the integration of Cisco UC technologies into Google Apps.

The Future of SharePoint and the Social Pivot

SharePoint and the Social PivotEveryone wants to understand the future roadmap of SharePoint. There is no shortage of content and discussion around Microsoft’s every move in the content management and collaboration space, with both angst and praise expressed about each individual feature and announcement. As with the idiom "not see the forest for the trees," focus too much on the short term features and you may lose sight of the broader SharePoint platform strategy.

Stop Working So Hard: Your Health Depends on It

social business, Hard Work, Long Hours Means Bad Heart, Dumber Brain?

News bulletin: After reading this article, get offline, go home, take a nap — or if you're lucky enough to be in a warm climate — have a date with the sun. (Wait, it's Friday! aren't you doing this anyway?)

Why?

Because working too hard is bad for your health, of course.

Marianna Virtanen, professor at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (Finland), proved this point with her research in the last few years, which led to this thesis. The title of her work pretty much summed it up: "Long Working Hours and Health in Office Workers: A Cohort Study of Coronary Heart Disease, Diabetes, Depression and Sleep Disturbances."

Checking email at midnight? Heart attacks coming. Putting the finishing touches on that proposal for the morning meeting at 1:30 a.m.? Diabetes is on its way.

CMSWire Survey: Majority of Readers are Well-Paid IT Pros

techies 320240.jpg

IT managers make up a bigger share of the CMSWire audience than a year ago, accounting for nearly a third of all visitors, according to our annual salary survey. Respondents also indicated that working with a strong team is more of a concern than "being paid fairly."

The IT professionals accounted for 32 percent of our readers, up 5 percent from the 2013 survey. The next three most popular industry sectors in our 2014 survey were media/marketing (11 percent), professional services (7.5 percent) and financial services (6 percent).

All four groups are heavy users of the digital marketing, customer experience management, information management and social business technologies that dominate the content on the site.

Renewed Buyout Talk Lifts Jive Shares

Shares of Jive Software jumped during the past few days on renewed reports that the social business provider is seeking a buyer.

Talk of a takeover has risen repeatedly since last May when Bloomberg News reported SAP passed on the deal. The latest report came on Tuesday when Re/code writer Arick Hesseldahl reported the company has been seeking a sale over the past several months with the help of the investment bank Qatalyst Partners, which is led by Frank Quattrone.

Company officials were mum. "We don't comment on rumors," said investor relations spokesman Brian Denyeau. Company spokeswoman Amanda Pires added nothing.
