Change is Rattling Through Web Publishing World

O, the wonderful world of Web publishing. There’s never a dull moment, that’s for sure. This week has abounded with all kinds of news about acquisitions, applications and product launches — after awhile, it all seems to blend together.

In attempt to straighten it all out, we offer the following synthesis.

Is the Blogosphere Shrinking?

Technorati: Blogosphere Shrinking?

In the past, we’ve highlighted the growing popularity of blogging. But, as it turns out, there’s a big difference between reading and writing.

Recently, Technorati released its 5th annual State of the Blogosphere report. While it notes that 133 million blogs have been indexed since 2002, it also shows that only 1.1% of them — 1.5 million blogs — have been updated in the last seven days.

To assert that blogging is a mainstream activity may be a bit of exaggeration. People may have blogs, but they may not actually be blogging.

Technorati Goes Shopping and Buys Blogcritics.org

Technoratori Acquires Blogcritics.org

Technorati, the blog search engine that showcases content from online newspapers and many other places announced that it has acquired Blogcritics.org.

With Technorati’s ability to track the links between blogs, rapidly index tens of thousands of updates every hour, and monitor live communities and the conversations they foster, the acquisition of Blogcritics not only allows its bloggers access to a wider audience, but gives Technorati an opportunity to gain advertising revenue.

Results: Most Popular CMS in Technorati's Top 100

It was a gray winter morning in CMSland and here's how we decided to spend it: we packed down a block of fresh soda bread and headed over to Chez Technorati to have a gander at their 100 most linked-to (popular) blogs. With that list in hand we skipped about through viewed source, many emails and some kindly conversation. In the end we had ourselves a nifty little list consisting of website name and the blogging technology or Web CMS platform said site ran on.

Simply put, we found that WordPress dominates the list, that Movable Type comes in with a respectable second, and the rest are either custom jobbies or a smattering of other platforms which are, relatively speaking, eating dust. We enclose the full list here for your consideration, but first a couple of notes on the results.
