Web CMS 2009 Gets a Last Dose of Release Candidates

‘Tis the season for milk and cookies, winter coats, and Web CMS release candidates. We writers won’t be back until after the start of 2010 when both WordPress and Movable Type are scheduled to have their official new versions out, so we thought we’d do a quick review of their most recent updates.

Now Check WordPress Plugin Compatibility Before Upgrading

Check WordPress Plugin Compatibility Before UpgradingGetting users to update their platforms can be a pain, but WordPress developers (news, site) always seems up to the challenge. Aware that it's not always laziness that contributes to an audience's disinterest, a beta version of a new feature has been rolled out to test the compatibility of plugins against various versions of WordPress. This way, you can be sure catching up won't mean leaving behind your favorite little blog bloaters.

WordPress Kicks Out a New Security Release

wordpress_logo_2009.jpgIn what is possibly the least shocking news ever, WordPress (news, site) has just released yet another low-level update to its platform. The 2.8.3 security release was quickly banged out after lead developer Ryan Boren "missed some places when fixing the privilege escalation issues for 2.8.1."

Anything with "security" and "issue" in the same sentence is probably pretty serious so, if you've got WordPress, it is highly recommended that you upgrade for what is probably the zillionth time this year here.

At least we know they're on top of user feedback.

Speaking of feedback, don't forget to drop your two cents about the upcoming multimedia features in WordPress 2.9. The topic is hot in the WP community as we reported last week, and the showdown between developers and users for how cluttered the new code will be has officially begun.

Keep up with all the twists and turns here, or you can sit in on the dev chat which is now held every Thursday at 21:00 UTC.

WordPress 2.9 Multimedia Features Votes Results Are Here

wordpress_logo_2009.jpgWell boys and girls, you voted and the results are in. WordPress (news, site) promised to release some semi-solid details on the features that made the 2.9 cut at some point in July, and so they came, skidding into home at the last possible minute.

Over 3,500 WordPress enthusiasts responded to the survey posted a few weeks ago, asking participants to choose which multimedia features sounded like winners among those that had been suggested (Flickr-like photo stream, a revised media UI, bulk media input API, media albums, easier embeds, etc.). The exact features for 2.9 are still being worked out, but the results of the survey provide a pretty good idea of how things are going to go down in the coming months. Et voilà:
