Microsoft's Data Warehousing Solution Reaches CTP

Code named "Madison", Microsoft's new data warehousing solution for SQL Server 2008 R2 (news, site) is now available as a CTP.

A Brand New SQL Server

Microsoft's release of SQL Server 2008 R2 has sparked a bit of interest. There have been a number of changes to the database platform to make it more robust, scale and secure. Along with virtualization improvements, enhanced data encryption, compliance and an increase in support for the number of logical processors, a new data warehouse solution is available.

Data Warehousing with Madison

Code named Madison, Microsoft's new data warehouse solution is designed to support enterprises with data in the petabyte range. The appliance was built by DATAllergo, a company Microsoft acquired last year.

Madison is an appliance that uses massively parallel processing (MPP). It runs on SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 and industry standard hardware.

SQL Server 2008 Madison

Massively parallel processing provides the ability to partition large tables across physical nodes, each with its own dedicated CPU, memory and storage. Each node runs in a separate instance of SQL Server. This parallel design is called "Ultra Shared Nothing" and results in faster running queries.

Madison operates a hub and spoke architecture that lets you easily add additional Madison appliances or SQL Server data marts to support individual department needs (Madison acts as the hub and publishes data out to various business units, or spokes).

Madison Hub and Spoke Architecture
 

Madison is the ultimate in data warehousing for SQL Server. It starts with SQL Server Enterprise, moves up to SQL Server Fast Track Data Warehouse and then to Madison.
