Ecommerce Indonesia 2017

Indonesia stands to achieve USD $150 billion of growth by 2025 if its goal of becoming the biggest digital economy of the region is achieved. One of the biggest components of the digital economy is the e-commerce market which will amount to USD $6.6 billion in 2017 and is targeted to reach USD $14.4 billion in 2021.

With the biggest and quickest growing online retail market in the region, Indonesia is stretching its infrastructure to accommodate and enlarge this growing potential of e-commerce to global heights. Buoying the Indonesian e-commerce potential are the mobile first initiatives in the country. Now, 75 percent of online purchases are made via mobile devices, surpassing the most digitally mature countries. With a projected sharp increase in mobile internet use, ready availability of inexpensive mobile phones and the coming online of the ambitious Palapa Ring Broadband project, more exciting times lie ahead for Indonesian e-commerce.

However, challenges remain in the form of inadequate ICT infrastructure, low internet penetration, concentration of digitization only in major cities, cybersecurity issues and logistics, delay the tapping of the e-commerce market to its fullest potential.
