There are plenty of free and open source content management systems (CMS). But no platform is as big or as common as WordPress. WordPress powers more than 12.7 million websites — an astounding 47.38 percent of the World Wide Web, according to BuiltWith, which monitors such things.
And just yesterday, WordPress released Version 4.0, named “Benny” in honor of jazz clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman.
"While 4.0 is just another number for us after 3.9 and before 4.1, we feel we’ve put a little extra polish into it. This release brings you a smoother writing and management experience we think you’ll enjoy," the team at Wordpress stated. It also introduces a redesigned look for its plugin and media library pages.

- Easier video embedding
- An editor that expands to fit content as users write, while keeping your formatting tools available
- Improved plugin resources and search capabilities.
PortlandLabs, the company behind concrete5 CMS, released new tools and pricing to serve larger organizations. The features include:
- Multi-Step Content Workflow: Enforces custom multi-step, multi-path content approval steps while maintaining concrete5's intuitive editing experience.
- Internationalization: Adds collaboration tools to increase efficiencies for a team managing a multilingual localized web presence.
- Centralized Digital Asset Management: Creates a single source of truth for data which can be repurposed across print, mobile and multiple micro-sites.
- HTML Exporter: Takes a complete copy of a website’s latest content and creates a set of files that can be hosted on any web server or CDN.
Franz Maruna, PortlandLabs CEO, said the tools “along with our support SLAs, dedicated hosting and services really provide a rich set of solutions for organizations considering concrete5 for their web presence.” With concrete5, he continued, "We’ve eliminated the gap between publishing and editing for mission critical business websites.”
The folks at Hippo are happy. And why wouldn't they be? "The growth and expansion just keeps on coming, with new partnerships, a roster of upcoming events and the release of Hippo Essentials," the team reported.
Hippo expanded its global network of partners, with particular growth in North America. The company recently announced its partnership with Los Angeles-based web development agency Oshyn, known for its expertise in website implementation and product development for web content management systems and platforms. Oshyn’s clients include Disney, Volkswagen, Miramax and Coca-Cola. Hippo also announced its partnership with integrated web marketing agency Boston Interactive, whose clients include Forrester Research, Harvard University, the International Data Group, the American Humane Association and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.
Hippo team members said these partnerships provide strategic opportunities to "bring the power of Hippo CMS" to American enterprises.
But that's not all.
Hippo CMS now guides developers intuitively through the most common steps when setting up new projects, offering a library of pre-built functionality. This reduces the need to have in-depth Hippo knowledge, provides help and documentation along the way, and allows for rapid development of new websites, campaign sites and microsites.
A new release of this open source tool will be available next Tuesday. It will come with its own 7.9 Hippo project archetype, which is the recommended way to start a new Hippo CMS project.

The team at Sense/Net said it has been working non-stop since its last release, Sense/Net ECM 6.3, to further improve the user experience. "We listened to what our clients had to say and kept a close look at the ECM trends of today. By incorporating what we’ve learned, we created a new update for our product: Sense/Net ECM 6.3.1," the company explained in a statement to CMSWire.
"Since we believe in open-source, we put what we could into the Community release and further expanded the possibilities that lie inside of the Enterprise version, making use of a couple of third party libraries."
- SnAdmin or packaging framework: From now on, we will distribute hotfixes in the form of SN packages. "Even better you can create your own, project specific packages to make the upgrade procedure less painful," it noted.
- Task Management: Sense/Net ECM is a web application, running in the context of one IIS process and designed to serve many users at the same time. There are tasks that are not well-suited for this environment -- for example long-running tasks that would keep the web server busy and make the user wait for the response, or resource-consuming jobs that are even able to crash the executing process. For these kinds of scenarios Sense/Net offers the Task Management module that lets you execute and keep track of background operations in a scalable way.
- Image editor: Sense/Net Image Editor helps users to edit images in the browser without having to install any software or plugin.
In addition, the team reports a stronger US presence with new partners, AppVizo and The Rothwell Group spanning both coasts.
