Pligg Updates Social Networking CMS With Security Fixes, Improved User Management

Pligg Updates Social Networking CMS With Security Fixes, Improved User ManagementDigg popularized the social voting and bookmarking concept in the late 2000s, which brought in democratized curation of news and information. While Digg has arguably declined since its heyday, websites still feature social bookmarking, and many of these use the open-source Pligg CMS. Pligg has recently rolled out version 1.2.0, an update that introduces important security fixes and improved user management, among other features.

ImpressCMS Wins 2009 Most Promising Open Source CMS

packt_logo_2009.jpgThis week Packt (news, site) is announcing one new award winner a day. Already they've revealed that Plone (news, site) won 2009 Best Other Open Source CMS, and Drupal (news, site) won Best Open Source PHP CMS.

Today's category is for the 2009 Most Promising Open Source CMS. Congratulations to the winner, ImpressCMS (news, site), and runners up Pixie (news, site) and Pligg (news, site). Still to come are the Hall of Fame winner on November 12, and the Best Overall Open Source CMS on November 13. The winner of this category receives $2,000 and both runners up receive $1,000 each.

The Packt award is really more of a popularity contest than a statement of fitness for a particular purpose, but it can serve to indicate where there is growing or waning energy around various open source projects. For a analysis of the top 20 most popular open source CMS, see the free 2009 Open Source Market Share report.

Now in its fourth year, the Packt Awards offer US$ 24,000 in prizes to the projects deemed "best" in their particular open source content management class.

Categories this year include a new Hall of Fame award alongside the usual titles of:

  • Best Overall Open Source CMS
  • Most Promising Open Source CMS
  • Best PHP Open Source CMS
  • Best Other Open Source CMS
  • Open Source MVPs

The Hall of Fame award is for previous winners of the Overall award and is an attempt to open up that category for more nominees and not just the usual suspects.

Design a Pligg CMS Template, Win Some Cash Money

Design a Pligg CMS Template, Win Some Cash MoneyCalling all theme developers! How would you like to make some easy money?

Pligg (news, site), the self proclaimed "social publishing CMS" is holding a Template Design Competition. Placing third will score you a US$ 50 Pligg Pro gift certificate that can be used at the Pligg Pro shop, second place will fatten your wallet by US$ 100, and first will get you a whopping US$ 300 in cash money.

To determine the top 3, judges will run the designs through two voting processes. Members of Pligg LLC will begin by generally voting on all submitted templates. The second round will consist of a point system to determine the quality, originality, and overall design. Each criteria is equally weighed and will have a possible value of 10.

Pligg understands the time and effort it takes to create a template, so they're also giving away a US$ 20 Pligg Pro gift certificate to qualified template authors that submit what they feel is both unique and well designed.

You can submit a design from now until October 11th and the rules for submissions can be found here. Happy designing!
