MCMS Gets Infiltrated, Releases Major Patch-Up Job

Apparently Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) comes stock with some bugs. While that will probably not surprise most cheeky PC-cum-Mac-users, these particular vulnerabilities can be exploited by hackers to initiate cross-site scripting attacks or otherwise compromise a system lacking adequate protection.

In essence, the bugs bring compromised systems back to the pre-malware days.

MS CMS and MS SharePoint Merging Architectures

Not surprisingly, Microsoft is working on merging the core architectures of the SharePoint Portal and Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) products. The first version of the new architecture is due out with the Office 12 release late next year.

In one of the first public statements on the topic, Chris Capossela, Microsoft’s group vice president of Information Worker Product Group, indicated that the future of the two products was around more common technologies and an integration, if not outright convergence.

Microsoft CMS Pricing Changes

As noted in a previous article (MS Content Management Server Pricing Changes), back in July 2003 Microsoft announced the availability of the Microsoft CMS Standard Edition. More changes are afoot, as it has just come to our attention that as of January 1st, 2004, the MCMS Enterprise edition was repriced from about USD 42, 000 per CPU to about USD 25,000 per CPU.

This pricing strategy change will obviously have a significant impact on the Web CMS market as a whole.

MS Office, Sharepoint, InfoPath, Whidbey Convergence

In a recent InfoWorld interview with Microsoft's Gydis Barzdukas, Director of Office Product Management, Barzdukas discusses the positioning of Office as a development platform and the relationships between Office and server technologies such as Sharepoint and .NET.

Of note is the potential impact that Whidbey has to shift the SharePoint portlet or "Web parts" rapid development capabilities.

Following are a few highlights from the interview.

The Jupiter Vision, Microsoft CMS

A few more quotes on the recent Microsoft CMS/Jupiter shift, from a ComputerWorld article:

Trina Seinfeld, a senior product manager in Microsoft's e-business server division, said that "it's really going to be up to customers" if the product is ever revived.
