Microsoft is Aggressively Expanding its Office Store

2014-9-5 Office store expands.jpg

At the end of a week that saw Microsoft piling on functionality and cash incentives to capture a bigger slice of the enterprise market, including businesses with a mere 150 seats, it also announced an aggressive expansion of its Office store and more languages to capture new markets.

While it's obvious Microsoft is going to push its own products in its own store, it will also highlight third party apps that integrate with Microsoft tools.

The announcement left a large number of observers underwhelmed. But the long-term vision behind the move may cause a lot of vendors concern about their future in a world where Google is seriously targeting the small business space.

Can Your Social Platform Be Your Intranet?

I made the point back in July that good old fashioned intranet content publishing was not dead, and that enterprise social collaboration platforms really weren't very good for one to many publishing. A separate web publishing platform would probably still be needed -- use the right tool for the right job. As a result of that article, Jive Software asked to have a chat about my theory, to refresh my knowledge of its platform and demo some of the latest features. I always jump at the chance to be proven wrong, and so have had some interesting conversations with Adam Mertz, senior director of product marketing at Jive.

Watch Your Favorite Tech Exec Get Wet: Ice Bucket Challenge

2014-29-August-water-over-head.jpg

The summer of 2014 will be known for many things. Among them, the cloud storage wars, Microsoft’s new Mobile First, Cloud First mantra, and the battle for the enterprise among Enterprise File Sync and Share (EFSS) vendors.

It will also go down as the summer of the ice bucket challenge when everyone from Cristiano Ronaldo toKaty Perry to Jack Black to Novak Djokovic to Taylor Swift and Oprah dumped buckets of ice over their heads to raise money to fund research and bring awareness to ALS, a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.

Zocalo + Amazon Web Services Could Be Game Changer

2014-8-29 Amazon Zocalo on general release.jpg

Things are already pretty messy in the productivity space between Microsoft and Google. But it could get a whole lot messier.

Amazon Web Services (AWS)  just announced that its document storage, sharing and collaboration application for the enterprises is now on general release.

Amazon Zocalo has been in limited preview since July, but is now available to all AWS customers with bargain basement prices, and could be a game changer in the document collaboration and sharing and sync space.

'Work Like a Network' Isn't Rocket Science, It's People

2014-27-August-Rocket-Science.jpgYour personal network, your social network(s), your corporate network, your neural network … you can’t swing a cat these days without hitting a network (Note: no cats were harmed in the writing of this column). And then Microsoft uses the phrase “work like a network.” What’s the big deal?

To me, “Work Like a Network” is the basis of fundamental communication and sociology of the workplace -- not rocket science. It’s marketing spin, just like “BYOD” and “consumerization of IT” and “Mentos: The Freshmaker.” But there’s a slight twist that Microsoft brings, and it’s an important one.

Does Jive Do Social Better by Putting the End User First?

Jive may be one of the last enterprise social collaboration pure play vendors that hasn’t been acquired. That may very well free it to do what its competitors can’t — namely, to innovate and integrate without constraint because it isn’t locked in to anyone or anything.

The company is committed to helping its customers realize more engagement, more value and more results through its platform which is used by leading corporations such as EMC, Prudential, Thomson Reuters, T-Mobile and many others.

Yesterday the company, which Gartner has named to its Leaders Quadrant, unveiled its “Summer Cloud Release” which aims to drive productivity in the enterprise by providing “a more customized, enhanced, enterprise collaboration experience across all mobile devices.” The release leverages Cisco’s real time communication services like WebEx and Jabber.

Dave Gray on Work Like a Network and the Role of Hierarchies

2014-26-August-Dave-Gray.jpgIt's been two years since Dave Gray published "The Connected Company" with Thomas Vander Wal. Since then, the disruptions to the marketplace noted in the book have only accelerated. But companies are still struggling to keep pace.

At the time of the book's release, Gray noted a lesson from evolution -- organisms must evolve with their surroundings or risk extinction. It's a lesson many businesses have learned the hard way.

Manage Inbox Overload with In App Collaboration

According to Forbes "the average person spends 13 hours a week just reading and processing email.” But over the past few years things have started to change. In-app communications is trying to take people out of their inboxes by sending messages within the context of specific applications.
