For most people, a web content management system (Web CMS) is a tool for the day-to-day chores of running a website. For Sourcefabric, a non-profit organization based in Prague, a Web CMS is a weapon for press freedom. Recently, CMSWire.com spoke to Sourcefabric’s head of communications, Adam Thomas, about his organization’s efforts to support the 21st century version of the small printing press.

It’s a basic question that gets to the heart of what content managers do, and it's important for organizations to know, too, for resourcing and staffing purposes. In a 2009 CMSWire article, McGovern asked the same question. Based on his experience, he wrote that we’re “still in the early stages of web management” and that “200 pages is a lot for one person, especially if you're going to be continuously reviewing and improving these pages.” Although it made sense to me, I wanted to know what other content managers thought. I opened a survey last month to find out.

To help struggling news organizations in areas that have a history of media censorship, the Prague-based non-profit Sourcefabric has developed a free and open source CMS, Newscoop. The organization recently released version 4.1, which features fast search functionality, and was developed in partnership with independent news organizations in the highly challenging media environment of Georgia.

Open source Web CMS provider, Umbraco has released version 6 of its flagship product. Technically called Umbraco 6.0 RC (for Release Candidate), the new solution will shortly be offered as the final release of version 6 unless initial usage reveals any serious problems.
