Microsoft, Snapchat Downplay Cyberattacks

Skype Reportedly Hacked + Snapchat User Data LeakedTwo popular online services are off to a good start in 2014 — for hackers, anyway.

One cyberattack involved Skype, the Internet calls service owned by Microsoft. The service's Twitter and Facebook accounts, along with the service's blog page, displayed messages Wednesday purporting to be from the Syrian Electronic Army.

It's the New Year. Did you push some of your tasks from last month into January because it seemed like a year away at the time?

Well, it's time to stop procrastinating: 2014 is here.

To help you get going in this infant stage of the new year, we're kicking off a series of "must dos" in areas including web CMS, customer experience and digital marketing.

We start here with a must do for implementing and administering a web CMS. And top of mind is getting back to the basics, according to Irina Guseva, senior analyst at the Real Story Group, which specializes in technology research and strategic advisory services.

Tips from an Industry User on Making Web CMS Work

As senior director of IT business partnerships & planning for platforms for Marriott International, Meghan A. Walsh works a little here and there with Web Content Management Systems (CMS). Kidding. She works in them a lot.

"Content management is not a one-size-fits-all task and yet vendors, for the most part, treat it that way," Walsh told CMSWire. "Every vendor tells me he can deliver content to multi-channels from one CMS, but I've not yet seen it proved. However, I'm still learning and meeting with vendors so maybe I'll have a different answer for you in the next couple of months."

Walsh talked with CMSWire about the challenges of running a CMS for a large, multi-channel organization.

How Google is Torturing Marketers by Tweaking Gmail

Gmail Changes' Effects on MarketersGoogle has gone nuclear on email marketers in 2013. In May, it shuffled promotional emails into a separate tab in Gmail inboxes. Now it has now taken away a key tracking mechanism marketers have traditionally leaned on.

Earlier this month, Epsilon released a study that concluded that tabbed inboxes are negatively impacting the ways consumers engage with brands in their Gmail inboxes. This week, CMSWire talked to Loren McDonald, vice president of industry relations at Silverpop, a digital marketing technology provider, about Google's decision to open images by default, another potential blow to marketers.

Embrace Adaptive Content to be Part of the Digital ZeitgeistWe're more than 20 years into the web revolution, so maybe it's about time we started treating content as flexible, reusable bits of data rather inflexible words and images on pages.

Adaptive content may just be the future of content management, but there is still no widespread agreement on what it should look like or how it is to be implemented.
