Well, well, well. This week saw more head-to-head competition from -- surprise, surprise -- Microsoft and Google. Google kicked out yet another tool specifically designed to bring MS users over to the G side, while SharePoint 2010 made a promise to revolutionize your organization.

Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Outlook

The name says it all -- almost.  Yes, Google's new migration tool transfers data over from Microsoft Outlook to Google Apps, but what you may not know is that it's built specifically for end-users. This is a nice change from previously released, administrator-managed tool such as Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Exchange

More importantly, it makes it possible for end-users to move to Google whether or not their administrators plan to.

"…today we're making it a lot easier for many end-users to move their old data themselves if their administrators aren’t planning server-side data migrations," explained Abhishek Bapna, Google Apps Product Manager, in Google's official announcement.

SharePoint Can Revolutionize

That's right, we said it: Revolutionize. Dux Raymondy Sy, a managing partner and the chief evangelist of Innovative-e, as well as the author of SharePoint for Project Management, outlined 5 reasons why you might want to utilize the tool.

  • Empower Individuals
  • Delivers Relevant Information
  • Supports Compliance Requirements
  • Interoperability
  • It’s All About The Benjamins

"How real is the SharePoint revolution?" he asked, in closing. "It’s as real as 1000 people showing up wanting to learn about Sharepoint at a community-driven event last May 15 in Washington, DC on a nice Saturday."

Navigating MS Office 2010

Meanwhile, we also saw some advice on picking your way through MS Office versions

"As with the Windows operating system, there is now a seemingly endless number of versions of the Office 2010 bundle," wrote our own Geoff Spick. "From the dreaded hacked-down Starter Edition, Home and Student Version, up to Business and Professional. And, now, Professional Plus. But, what do they offer and which is best for you?"
