Due to a highly volatile marketplace, Gartner (news, site) specifically advises that you avoid comparing vendor placement in prior years, but it's still exciting to see who made the cut in the Enterprise CMS Magic Quadrant this time around.

Leaders include Oracle, IBM, Open Text and Microsoft, while players like Autonomy, Xerox and Hyland Software sit in the other three brackets. Observe:

Jive (news, site) has had some serious money pumped into it over the years, and recently it's bagged another US$ 12 million to bring its social enterprise platform to the fore.

This year, Web content management (WCM) was promoted to the Magic Quadrant level in Gartner-land. Previously, only Enterprise CMS vendors were MQ-eligible. The firm says the MarketScope approach was no longer suited for "dynamic, evolutionary trends'" happening in the Web CMS space.

Gartner (news, site) hopes that the report will help those with a CMS short-list in hand to make the right decision. While it may not answer all the questions on your WCM mind, it's one way of looking at the market and the players.

Ektron (news, site) found its sweet spot as one of the Visionaries in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Web Content Management. We've seen Ektron on other "lists" before, including Gartner's MarketScope. And now, hello, the Magic Quadrant.

Partially, Ektron attributes this positioning to the ability of their CMS product -- EktronCMS400.NET -- to deliver on the Web 2.0 capabilities front. Web 2.0, as Gartner says, “is… breathing new life into the WCM market.” Just when we thought that Web 2.0 was oh so 2007.

The CMS vendor has been working on several strategic initiatives over the past year, so it really should not come as a surprise that Ektron gets a nod from Gartner. We told you about many of Ektron’s happenings, including:

• Ektron’s CMS deployment in the Amazon Cloud
• Professional Services growth
• New offices in Texas and California
• Stronger focus on sales
• Enhancements and updates to EktronCMS400.NET
• Revenue growth in Q1 2009

Ektron thinks that some of the differentiators they have in the competitive Web CMS market are their core CMS product, social networking modules and the professional services group along with partner engineers.

The fact that Ektron is not a sole owner of the Visionaries Magic Quadrant should inspire the company to work even harder and build on the current momentum. Let’s see what they come up with. It's probably not the best time to rest on laurels.

The title of visionary isn't one that is handed out as readily as it once was. Move over Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford. Make room for Mimosa (news, site).

The email and file archiving solution provider has been named a Visionary Vendor by Gartner, Inc. in its “Magic Quadrant for E-Mail Active Archiving.” But it didn't happen over night. Mimosa spent the better part of the last year adding new features to its Mimosa NearPoint platform to support eDiscovery, search and compliance.

Fasten your common sense seatbelt and bolt on your FUD helmet. According to a report just released by Websense, a web, data and email security firm based in San Diego, CA, in the second half of 2008 70 of the top 100 websites either hosted malware or linked to sites hosting malware. To set some context, these numbers represent a 16% increase over the previous six-month period.

The top 100 sites -- many of which are social networking, Web 2.0 and search sites -- represent the majority of all webpages viewed on the Internet and were identified via the Alexa web service.

Users love SharePoint. Users hate SharePoint. Despite much controversy around MOSS, Microsoft has been positioned by Gartner in the 2008 Leaders Magic Quadrant in both the Enterprise Content Management and Horizontal Portals segments.

Microsoft is proud of its positioning in the ECM Magic Quadrant and says this development “signifies the strides SharePoint Server 2007 is making in the ECM industry.”

MOSS as Enterprise CMS was released less than two years ago, impacting the entire ECM industry.

Vignette proudly announced that Gartner has positioned the company in the Leaders Quadrant in its Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portal Products 2008 report.

Along with highlighting Vignette’s strengths as a Horizontal Portal vendor, the researchers at Gartner also give a few words of caution.

The Forrester Wave for ECM Suites in 2007 is out, and like its rival the Gartner Magic Quadrant, it has listed IBM as the leader in Enterprise Content Management.

The folks at Gartner have come up with another iteration of their “Magic” Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management (ECM) vendors with what appears to be a very short-sighted perspective — an intentional exclusion of Software as a Service (SaaS) vendors as part of the market for content management software.

This naturally begs the question, why not include them? A big part of an analyst firm’s focus should be on what’s coming, as opposed to what has already happened.

It’s that time of year again. The researchers at Gartner retreat into seclusion at their hidden compound and combine the secret ingredients needed to create the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management. Some people rub their hands, some shake their heads, and some scoff.

The first day of the 5th annual eZ Conference, the biggest Content Management conference in Europe, occurred on June 7 in Skien, Norway. The conference opened with a keynote presentation by two of the founders of eZ Systems, Aleksander Farstad, CEO, and Bård Farstad, Director of Strategic Relations.

Aleksander and Bård outlined nine CMS trends, including the move towards consolidation and standardization of CMS platforms and the crucial concept that content management is the core of every business.
