XOOPS v2.3.3: Installation of Open Source CMS Gets Easier
XOOPS (news, site) released version 2.3.3 of its PHP-based open source, object-oriented Web Content management System. This release focuses on bug fixes and usability improvements, with the highlight being an improved installer.
The Improvements
The eXtensible Object Oriented Portal System, otherwise known as the XOOPS Project improvements are in the areas of the profile module, the pm module, the installer, themes and the TinyMCE implementation.
By far the highlight is the improved installer, making it easier to install this open source CMS and to install key modules.
These improvements come to XOOPS from a combination of the core team and the international community as well. Project members span around a dozen countries and have translated XOOPS into over 20 languages.

XOOPS 2.3.3 released.
When asked when features such as Multisite XOOPS will be merged, one project team member stated that after testing they hope to have this feature in the 2.4 release. You can join the beta testing efforts yourself, see the call for beta testers for more information.
The 2.4 release should also see the merger with Simple-XOOPS, bringing Dirk Herrmann onto the XOOPS Core Team. Herrman won the December 2008 XOOPS Innovator Award, and he brings with him a wealth of features and experience.
This year should be an exciting and productive one in the XOOPSiverse.
Building on the Old
This latest release builds on the momentum that XOOPS already had behind them from 2008.
The previous release, 2.3.2, had over 25,000 downloads within three months. On top of that, in 2008, XOOPS showed it was a project to watch by becoming a finalist in the SourceForge Community Awards and the CMS Awards by Packt Publishing. It also won the 2008 China Open Source Software Contest Award.
For installation and upgrade instructions, along with the changelog of bug fixes and features changed, see the full release page.
