Are Analytics Firms Undervalued? TIBCO Sells at a Premium

Stop the presses -- or at least the rumors. We now know who will buy middleware analytics provider Tibco: Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm.

At $4.3 billion, it is the largest tech buyout this year.

And worried Tibco shareholders who have seen their investments slide by as much as 23 percent in the past year, should be relieved to cut their losses a bit. In the last week the stock was trading as high as $20 per share. Vista is paying $24.

Gartner Names Wise Choices for Workplace Social Software

2014-12-September-Meeting-of-owls.jpg

In the market for social software? Gartner included 17 vendors in this year’s Magic Quadrant for Social Software in the Workplace.

Like all of the other Garter Magic Quadrants, it's quite difficult to make the list. And squeezing into the Leaders quadrant is especially challenging. In this case, only Microsoft, IBM, Jive, Salesforce and Tibco managed to earn a spot.

However, Gartner points out that Challengers offer solutions that have a strong market presence, and adds that these vendors have the market position and resources to become Leaders down the line. VMWare, Atlassian and Sitrion earned spots in this quadrant.

TIBCO Banks on Personalization in Digital Marketing Dive

TIBCO is keeping its "Switzerland of technology" theme going with its latest product release -- this time in the digital marketing arena.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based provider released today TIBCO Engage, a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) marketing application that officials say is the market's first true real-time, personalized marketing experience across any channel.

And in the spirit of the "buy versus build marketing cloud debate," TIBCO said this is not an inflexible lock-you-in cloud platform.

"We're not saying throw away your e-commerce systems or your point of sale or even your CRM," Leandro Perez, director of product marketing at TIBCO, told CMSWire. "We're going to come in and connect to those systems. We're not locking people in. We're adding some key functionality they don't have but also leveraging the technology they already have. We're agnostic."

TIBCO's tibbr Integrates with SharePoint, Microsoft Outlook

In the world of social software integration, officials at TIBCO Software Inc. say it’s a neutral country.

"We’ve always been seen as the Switzerland of technology,” Leandro Perez, director of product marketing at Palo Alto-based TIBCO, told CMSWire.

Why? Because officials at TIBCO are confident their platform integrates with any other.

And their latest integration comes with SharePoint, whose users can leverage TIBCO’s tibbr plug-in social software collaboration platform directly within SharePoint. TIBCO officials also announced integration with Microsoft Outlook software.

“Users of SharePoint use it as a document repository,” said Srini Vennakota, director of product management at TIBCO. “And it’s very important to be able to navigate those documents and be able to share comments and see context behind those documents.”

Discussion Point: Can Social Media Improve Customer Relationships?

discussion-point

Life has become increasingly complex for modern marketers. In the not so distant past, all anyone expected them to do was identify, acquire and retain customers.

Now they're expected to build long-term relationships with them — and as anyone who has ever had a partner or a spouse can tell you, that takes a lot of work.

In his most recent book, "What's the Future of Business: Changing the Way Businesses Create Experiences (WTF)," Brian Solis explores the challenges of building customer relationships as well as options to improve them.

Solis, a principal analyst with the Altimeter Group, suggests marketers can improve customer relationships through the use of social identity, which he defines as the information about an individual available in social media, including profile data as well as ongoing social activity. As he explains:

Marketers are spending more on technology every year -- especially technology that can engage customers in personal ways at scale, like marketing automation, email service providers, retargeting and dynamic web content. Social Identity improves value of these tools by improving targeting capabilities."

We shared his hypothesis with five senior marketers to see whether they agreed that brands can target and personalize customer messaging through social identity.

The Question

How does the contextual insight available in social media provide an opportunity to better know and engage audiences with personalized content and experiences across channels?

Fast Data Beats Big Data, TIBCO CMO Claims

Lori Wright.jpgBig data can be a big disappointment. As TIBCO CMO Lori Wright explained, it's hard to find the value in complicated, ginormous and ever-growing masses of information about everything from "weather to social sentiment."

So maybe it's time to start thinking about something else — something that may be a more meaningful piece of the data-fueled puzzle. "Fast data," she said.

In this information intensive, hyper-connected, data-driven world — where right time business insight can separate the movers from the losers — speed thrills.

"How do you find the data you need at the moment it’s needed? You speed it up," Wright told CMSWire. "Fast Data that’s filtered and delivered to the right place as quickly as new information arrives solves the (slow) big data problem."

IBM, Microsoft, SAP, SAS Lead Gartner's BI Analytics Magic Quadrant

Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms is one of the most dynamic quadrants Gartner produces. It reflects a market that is still growing and intensely competitive. However, all is not well in paradise.

Enterprises are looking to expand the use or even standardize their data discovery platforms for larger business intelligence (BI) deployments. But Gartner reports that many vendors lack the enterprise features around governance, administration and scalability that are required to do this.

Gartner MQ For Workplace Social Software: Atlassian, NewsGator, Tibco, VMWare Challenge, Many Vendors Excluded

In our first look at this year’s Gartner Magic Quadrant for Social Software for the Workplace, we saw a market characterized by extreme volatility. It is also a market where differences between vendor's products are difficult to distinguish at a functional level. However, Gartner found four vendors strong enough to make it into the Leaders’ Quadrant, named four challengers and offered a long list of vendors that didn’t make the grade, including some surprising names.
