Take XOOPS CMS for a Test Drive With click2try

click2try, test drive XOOPS CMS

There’s a lot of open source CMS choices out there for users looking for a web content management system. But, in this economy, there isn’t a lot of money to go around.

So, when a company goes out to find a solution that best suits their requirements, there’s always the concern that there may be a better system out there, but they just didn’t get the chance to try it out.

With click2try -- a community site -- users can "test drive" some of the existing open source products on pre-configured virtual appliances. XOOPS is, supposedly, the latest addition to click2try's CMS catalog.

XOOPS Teams Bury the Forks, Web CMS Code Reunited

XOOPS Releases New Version It's a fairly common occurrence in the world of open source that developers join together to build a solution, then find themselves not necessarily agreeing with the future roadmap of that solution. What do they do? They break apart into what's called a "fork" and do their own thing related to the solution they worked so hard on.

It's rare though, that these forks join back to the main branch. Rare, but not impossible. This is what has happened with XOOPS (news, site). They say its a sign of "visionary leadership" that has attracted not just one, but three of the XOOPS forks to come back:

  • Simple-XOOPS: Multi-site Hack, Multi-Language Hack, URL Rewriting, SEO Optimization, an integrated updater, automated installer and an automated check for updates
  • EXM System: A number of usability improvements
  • Zarilia: Handlers for OnEvent, Media and Translations, Dynamic Menu System, Enhanced User Admin and Error Administration and Content and Article management complete with Sections and Categories, Ratings, RSS and more

With the recent release of XOOPS 2.3.3, work on the PHP-based web content management system is now focused on the next version. The plan is for these forks to be re-integrated forks into the XOOPS 3.0 version. This should go a long way towards making XOOPS as well known as open source CMS solutions like Drupal and Joomla!

As for the owners of these re-integrated forks? They aren't going anywhere. Eduardo Cortes (EXM) and Dirk Hermann (Simple-XOOPS) will join the XOOP Core Team -- Cortes to lead the Usability efforts and Hermann to be Lead Maintainer for XOOPS 2.3, and then the Lead Developer for XOOPS 2.4 and John Neill (Zarilia) will be team leader of the Module Development Team.

XOOPS Wins 2008 OSSContest Award

XOOPS Wins 2008 OSSContest Award

XOOPS, the PHP and MySQL based Web CMS, is hitting the news again. This time XOOPS China has won the main award for excellence in creative application at the annual China OSSContest.

The award will be presented at the Xiyuan Hotel in Beijing, China on Jan 13, 2009, during the 2008 Open Source Software Development Summit. The committee is composed of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), National High Tech R&D Program (863 Program) and China Software Industry Association (CSIA).

This is a huge achievement for the XOOPS team in China. With China being a major player in the technology and computer industries and planning on upping their spending on “core electronic components, high-end interchangeable chips and fundamental software products” in 2009, open source opportunities in China should flourish.

XOOPS was also a finalist this year in Packtpub.com’s Annual Open Source CMS Contest for the best PHP open source CMS. Although they did not win, with extremely stiff competition it was notable just to be named a finalist.

With two prestigious recognitions in less than 6 months, XOOPS is flexing its muscle as a powerful, PHP based open source Web CMS.

Look for more big things from XOOPS throughout 2009. Who knows, maybe that finalist spot in PacktPub.com’s contest will become a winning spot this year.
