Social software provider NewsGator and Vizit, a social collaboration solution provider for SharePoint, announced that they've integrated their software to improve viewing, commenting and conversation abilities for SharePoint users.

In the document management space, it was always going to be interesting to see who would get the ball rolling for 2012. Kofax, as one of the most active companies last year in terms of product development and acquisitions, looks set to continue its momentum, this time with the release of Kofax DotImage Enterprise Edition.

After everything that has happened around the OpenOffice fork last year, the Document Foundation has announced the release of a version that is suitable for enterprises, Google Docs got a makeover, Kofax and Atalasoft have released an imaging SDK, Metalogix offers archiving for Exchange and Marex releases Filebound Express.

You may recall from last week that Kofax gobbled-up Atalasoft (news, site) with the aim of adding the latter’s SDK to its capture and transformation module. The price was right and so were terms of the deal. But Kofax didn’t get all of Atalasoft, although maybe it should have tried considering Vizit -- one of Atalasoft's products -- has spun off on its own and is targeting the SharePoint market.

This week, Kofax decided to enhance its SDK with the acquisition of Atalasoft, Nuance upgrades to OmniPage 18, Microsoft tells us why Office 365 is good for Mac, First to File extends patent document management reach and Google looks set to introduce Google Docs Offline this summer -- again.

Acquisition fever continues apace, this time with the announcement by Kofax (news, site) that it is to buy Atalasoft (news, site) in a deal that will see see it add to Atalasoft’s SDK and offer it for use with its capture and transformation modules software by the end of the year.

Document management this week has been dominated by the release of a number of document viewers including two that make it easier to view and share documents in SharePoint 2010. Xerox has also been busy with the release of mobile printing software, while eFileCabinet has upgraded its document management software to v5.0.

While much was made about the release of Office 2010 in May, the announcement that Microsoft intends to make an Office release for Mac in October has been relatively quiet. Also this week there has been a number of releases that aim to make PDF conversion much easier.

Long weekends are usually short on news, but not this time. Over the past few days, a new suite of mobile Office applications has just been unveiled, while SharePoint is not the only software to get records management, with IBM’s Lotus Domino platform getting a little records management love too.

The latest upgrade to Atalasoft’s (news, site) Vizit SP adds badly needed search abilities to the integrated document viewer that will enable users search, find and preview SharePoint documents from the Vizit SP 2.0 user interface.

PSIGEN Software (news, site) continues it development of PSI:Capture with the release of v3.6, which, like previous upgrades, adds a couple of more small improvements that should make things a bit easier for all concerned.

This time they have focused on improving the abilities of v3.6 to archive fax images automatically as well as additional enhancements to their Advanced Data Extraction (ADE) software. And again, they have also spruced-up their SharePoint migration abilities.

Earlier this summer, PSIGEN Software (news, site)  and Atalasoft (news, site) announced that they were coming together to provide an image capture solution for SharePoint. There was a lot of cheering at the time as they said the combination of advanced capture and viewing technology would provide an affordable, feature rich option to a market with few alternatives.

Since then not a lot has been said about it -- until yesterday at the SharePoint conference in Las Vegas when the companies jointly announced the release of the SharePoint Document Management bundle consisting of Atalasoft’s Vizit SP and PSIGEN’s PSI:Capture.

DotImage 8.0, the newest iteration of the imaging toolkit for .NET developers, was kicked out by Atalasoft (news, site) last week. The updated version comes with nifty additions like Silverlight controls, barcode writing capabilities and support for TWAIN 2.0.

That Psigen Software (news, site), a fourteen year old company that has focused on “perfect, simple imaging”, and Atalasoft (news, site), a provider of scanning and imaging technologies have gotten together is no real surprise given Pisgens’s recent form.

Psigen is mostly known for its capture solution for SharePoint -- PSI:Capture -- and has been busy using it to fill one of the holes in the SharePoint platform, notably its ability, or lack thereof, to provide a decent document image capture function.

Atalasoft’s crown jewel is the sophisticated, but user-friendly, image viewer VizitSP that adds viewing, cleanup, classification and annotation abilities to even the poorest system.

It’s not just Web CMS vendors who want in on the SharePoint craze that is expected to continue for a while to come. Other technology vendors see the benefits of SharePoint integration, including Kodak and Atalasoft, providers of scanning and imaging technologies.
