Virtosoftware, which offers over 20 components for SharePoint 2007 and 2010, has announced the availability of a new data pivot view web part. This component allows users to explore large amounts of SharePoint data in a single view.

What It Offers

The component from Virtosoftware, built using .NET 3.5 and Silverlight, allows users to browse, filter, sort and group large sets of data in a visual and interactive way. It installs on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

The makers of the product made a demo to illustrate its usability. Potential customers should be aware the component requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher.

The web part allows users to browse data items represented by their images and quickly switch between different kinds of views. Users can also drill down to an individual data item to view detailed attributes as text.

The pivot view is configurable in the browser. Users point the control at one or more SharePoint list, SQL table or XML data source.  Once a data source is defined, categories with a number, string, long string, date/time or hyperlink data type can be created to sort and group the data. Users can view data as a grid or chart. Selecting individual images displays detailed data about the item.

The product will be available in two versions for SharePoint 2007 and 2010: standard and pro. A free standard version for SharePoint 2007 is currently available for download. The free version can only connect to one data source with up to 300 items. The pro version (when released) will be priced per front-end server and never expire. Developer licenses will be 20% of the regular product price, but cannot be used in a production environment.
