Admittedly, not everyone thinks "open source" when .NET geeks start talking shop. Mono has had a positive influence on this perception and recently released SharpDevelop (#develop) is adding momentum. SharpDevelop v2.0 is an open source .NET integrated development environment (IDE) that speaks C#, VB.NET, and Python-inspired Boo. SharpDevelop started life back in 2000 and has been keeping a fairly steady stride since then. After many betas and release candidates, the official v1.0 hit the pavement in September of 2004. Version 2.0 has been in the works since mid 2005, with the official release on the 17th of this month. The SharpDevelop features list is impressive, it integrates with useful tools such as NDoc and NUnit, and provides a working environment that will be familiar to anyone with a Visual Studio background. The 2.0 download is ready and waiting and the SharpDevelop community site offers a range educational and support resources.
