Originate Buys Applied Intelligence Group

Originate has acquired the professional services companyApplied Intelligence Group, which makes digital platform solutions.

The deal gives Originate, aSan Francisco-based venture and enterprise development firm, a foothold in the Boston areawhere AppliedIntelligence is based. The two firms have worked together since 2012.  Originate already has seven other branches.

"Opening an Originate office in Boston also brings us closer to some of the country’s premier enterprises andinstitutions,”  Rob Meadows, CEO of Originate, said in a statement.He said Applied Intelligence adds " unparalleled talent" to solveclient problems.

Buying Spree

Originate, which was founded in 2007, said the acquisition follows otherrecent investments, including its development of a new “ScalaTransformation” platform. Its clients include Angie'sList, Echo360, Asurion and Zoodles.

The companies aren't disclosing the value of the acquisition, said Originatespokeswoman Tricia Primrose. She said Originate often invests in companies withwhich it has a working relationship. "They wear two hats with a ventureside plus they work with companies," she explained.

With a presence in Boston, the company said it hopes to apply its knowledgeof educational institutions to work with large universities in the Boston area.Primrose said the company has recruited employees from MIT, but doesn't yet haveestablished relationships with specific universities.

Since its founding more than two decades ago, Applied Intelligence hasfocused on desktop, web and mobile products. Its services include design,development and product management for digital solutions.

Learning Opportunities

Primrose said itsclients include AmericanExpress, The WaltDisney Company, Apple and BankBoston,which merged into Fleet and then BankAmerica.

Horovitz will lead the Boston office along with Jeff Bartolini, currently VPfor product development at Applied Intelligence.

In addition to Boston, Originate has offices in San Francisco, SiliconValley, Orange County, Stockholm, Hangzhou, New York and Los Angeles.
