Open source business intelligence platform, Pentaho (news, site) has released a new version of Pentaho BI 4 Enterprise Edition heavily focused on providing end users reporting capabilities previously reserved for technologists.

User Driven Business Intelligence

Pentaho BI 4 Enterprise Edition is a major release for the vendor. It includes a number of completely new features all targeted at enabling non-technical business users to meet their own reporting needs without relying on technology staff.

The latest release includes interactive reporting, a web-based drag and drop report designer that allows users to perform lightweight data analysis. Interactive reporting supports: inline formatting, column resizing, filters, sample data and data-less design modes as well as editable templates.

A Sexy New Interface

In addition to the new interactive reporting feature, Pentaho includes a completely redesigned user interface that Pentaho described as “sexy” when CMSWire spoke with company representatives regarding the release. The goal of the new interface is to make business intelligence more appealing to all consumers and easier to customize for enterprises and OEM organizations.

The release also features enhanced data discovery and visualizations that allows users to generate data visualizations such as charts and drill down interactively. The data visualization make it easier for users to understand large datasets and its relationships.

Not all of the improvements to the suite are visual. Pentaho has made its data access more sophisticated and now features a single strategy for connecting to disparate types such as:

  • Operational relational data stores
  • OLAP cubes
  • Big data repositories
  • Data as a service

New Features for Technologist

Pentaho BI 4.0 Enterprise Edition did not leave out technologist with its latest release -- although the focus is clearly the non-technical users. Pentaho has improved its data federation capabilities allowing users to integrate multiple sources and expose it as a single virtual repository without the necessity to create an interim staging area. In addition, the vendor has expanded support for popular NOSQL providers and now includes connectivity for HBase and MongoDB as a well as expanded support for Hadoop

Additional information and software is available for download now on the Pentaho website and includes a 30-day fully supported evaluation.
