While there are many different improvements in this new version and many more promised for v6.0, which will be released in the middle of next year, the principal themes in this new release are: making it easier for the users to use, and social document management.
The problem with the existing system, according to Nuxeo software engineer Benjamin Jalon, is that there were too many tabs in the interface for all the different types of information.
That, he says, in the new version will be greatly simplified with a workspace that offers users all the features they need within easy reach.
Social Document Management
There are also added social features like activity streams, and a new social dashboard, as well as the choice of how your information will be laid out, with the ability now to have all the content relating to one particular subject available on the same dashboard. Other social features include:
- Relationships monitoring
- Aggregated view on Activity/Audit/Comment
- Digest notifications
- Rich profile management
With this there is also simplified publishing and simplified administration, as well as the possibility of giving other users access to your workspace, or parts of your workspace making the whole collaboration experience easier.
Some of the collaborative features that will be available now include:
- Added conflict detection to ensure two people are not conflicting on a document
- Integrate diff/merge system
- Document type dedicated to collaboration
- Collaborative editing in the browser
- Extend usage of wiki markup
Finally with the version coming out users will be able to use Microsoft Office templates with Nuxeo documents, and associate a document, while they will also be able to generate an office file by merging template and meta-data.
There are a lot more upgrades to what Jalon has described as a significant upgrade. Due for release in mid-November, more details then.
