Metalogix Acquires StoragePoint, Adds External BLOB Storage to Suite
A couple of months ago, Metalogix (newssite) acquired StoragePoint, a provider of external storage options for SharePoint. Now we see the first official release of that acquisition.

Intelligent Archiving/Storage

If you use SharePoint, you know that all content, including documents and other files are stored within a SQL Server content database as BLOBs (Binary Large Objects). This is probably not a bad thing if you don't have a large amount of content stored. But if you do have a lot of content, you are likely running into issues of storage space, CPU utilization and other hardware issues.

The choice is to either spend more money on hardware or offload all that BLOB content into an external storage system. And this is where StoragePoint comes in. It provides SharePoint Administrators with the ability to identify an external storage facility for BLOB content.

Since the Metalogix acquisition, StoragePoint has been upgraded and includes a number of new capabilities. The first, of course, is that it supports not only SharePoint 2007 (and WSS3.0), but also SharePoint 2010 (and SharePoint Foundation).

Leveraging the SharePoint EBS APIs (SharePoint 2007) and the the SQL RBS APIs (SP2010), administrators can define external locations and offloading/archiving rules to move SharePoint data into those locations.

Some of the new capabilities for StoragePoint 3.0 include:

  • Endpoint Management: An endpoint is a storage location that includes rules for compression and encryption and can be actively monitored.
  • Storage Profiles: Define multiple endpoints per profile and set rules that push certain content types or sizes to specific endpoints.
  • Cloud Storage: Support for Azure cloud-based storage.
  • Intelligent Archiving: Admins can define rules for storage of content that is not used on regular basis.
  • Dashboards: Monitor health and run reports on storage locations.

Check out all the new features included with StoragePoint 3.0 here.
