It seems the intranet is getting an infusionof new life in the form of social networking. Last week we reported on Jive’snew social intranet; this week platform-as-a-service provider eXo is announcingtheir social intranet as a service, Cloud Workspaces.
The Intranet Goes Social
eXo’s Cloud Workspaces is a cloud-based offering that provides social features collaboration in a single tool. Built on top of eXo Platform 3.5, Cloud Workspaces allows organizations to quickly create a social intranet with traditional document management features, collaboration tools, calendaring and social features like profiles and activity streams.
In addition, the platform provides customizable personal dashboards that make it easier for users to remain productive. Although the solution is cloud-based, it supports customization. Cloud Workspaces includes a built in IDE that allows developers to build extensions, integrate applications and gadgets or create mashups.
Everyone from content management to ERP vendors are racing to include social features in their platform, so eXo’s decision is not too surprising. The platform will likely appeal to small and medium businesses that want a pre-integrated, holistic platform instead of selecting the multiple best of breed tools they will need to make it all work together. Users can also migrate intranets created in Cloud Workspaces to on-premises deployments of eXo’s portal platform.

Cloud Works has native mobile apps for iPhone, iPad and Android that enables users to access content securely everywhere. Cloud Workspaces is available now as a free public beta. Users can sign up for Cloud Workspaces using a company email. When users from the same company (with the same email domain) are added to the workspace, the network updates to reflect the new members.
