OpenText Acquires Global 360, Takes Aim at Adaptive Case Management Market
OpenText (news, site) is beefing up its case management capabilities with the acquisition of business process management provider Global 360.

The Demand for Business Process Management

Case Management is a much discussed capability in the enterprise content management space and OpenText is no stranger to it, offering case management via SharePoint integration.

But it isn't considered a leading vendor in this market. According to the Forrester Wave for Dynamic Case Management (which is the same thing as "adaptive" case management), Global 360 is among the leaders which also include IBM, Appian and EMC among others.

According to OpenText, the decision to acquire Global 360 will help the enterprise CMS vendor take a strong lead in the market for dynamic case management:

The major, case-based operations in large organizations are heavily dependent on content and process management, for example, loan processing, complaint management, claims processing and customer on-boarding. All of these solutions can benefit from dynamic case management, which more effectively combines content, processes and collaboration," said Eugene Roman, Chief Technology Officer, OpenText. "Dynamic case management is the kind of technology customers are moving to and it ties together the strengths we're building in our ECM and BPM portfolios."

The Microsoft Relationship

Part of the draw of Global 360 is its strong Microsoft relationship (something OpenText has itself) -- Global 360 is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner and is part of the Microsoft SharePoint ISV Partner Advisory Council.

This is also what OpenText said about Metastorm, another BPM provider it acquired in March. Metastorm cost OpenText US$ 182 million. Global 360 is a little bit more at US$ 260 million, the deal is is closed now as Global 360 is a private company, but it won't show up on OpenText's books until first quarter fiscal 2012.

Learning Opportunities

OpenText has said that the people and technology of Global 360 will be joining the company and the current product roadmaps will continue as planned -- at least for now. In fact, Metastorm just released it latest update last week (read about that here).

Global 360, A Solid Acquisition

Global 360 is a smart acquisition for OpenText, along with some great talent (which includes CMSWire contributing author Deb Miller), its technology is strong. In April it added MS Lync integration and automatic task assignment capabilities to it Case360 suite.

OpenText is definitely no stranger to acquiring complementary vendors and bringing their technology in the family, but it will be interesting to see how Global 360 and Metastorm fair as separate solutions going forward. Some integration will be required, just how much, we'll have to wait and see.
