Rackspace might have just helped SharePoint along in its journeyto being used by every business on earth. The Texas-based cloud services provider has announcedits new end-to-end SharePoint offering that provides hosting, design,development, training and support.
SharePoint has a way of spreading across organizations like an ivy. From enterprise level implementations to rogue departmental deployments it seems to be almost everywhere. However, many of those installs are not exactly what you would call optimal, and even when the infrastructure is solid, custom applications built on the platform may be lacking. Rackspace’s new Services for SharePoint provides an alternative to becoming an expert in all things SharePoint.
Rackspace has offered SharePoint products since 2008, but earlier this year the company rounded out it services portfolio by acquiring SharePoint911, a SharePoint consulting firm. We’re finally seeing the output of that purchase. Rackspace is positioning itself as a one stop shop for all things SharePoint. The new service includes:
- Infrastructure hosting
- Application and administrative support including installation & configuration, site collection & creation, maintenance, monitoring, backup & restore
- Professional services by SharePoint MVPs and MCMs
- 24/7/365 support
Rackspace offers SharePoint in both dedicated server and cloud-hosted versions. Customers can sign up for a 45-day free trial for SharePoint 2013 until March 31, 2013.
SharePoint as a Service
Rackspace's move to provide more holistic services is smart. The infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) markets are becoming increasingly crowded -- giving business a long list of options for hosting SharePoint. Unfortunately for some organizations, getting SharePoint installed is only a small piece of what’s necessary to use the platform effectively. A turnkey solution and single point of accountability will appeal to many of these organizations.
The new service isn’t just a win for customers. Rackspace is attaching itself to the uber popular SharePoint platform in hopes of tagging along to new customers and gaining deeper penetration into existing clients. We will be watching to see if it works.
