Automattic is giving AI agents the keys to WordPress.com — with human oversight built in.
On March 20, the company enabled AI agents including Claude, ChatGPT, OpenClaw and Cursor to create, edit and manage content on WordPress.com sites. The update adds write capabilities to the Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration the company introduced in October 2025.
According to company officials, the expansion responds to user requests for more functionality after thousands connected AI tools to access site content, analytics and settings. The 19 new writing functions span posts, pages, comments, categories, tags and media.
Users enable individual toggles in the WordPress.com MCP settings dashboard, then interact with their site through whatever AI client they prefer — no plugin installation or code changes required.

From Insight to Action
The original MCP release gave agents read access: querying site analytics, reading content and surfacing settings. According to Automattic, users adopted it quickly but consistently requested write access so agents could act on what they found rather than just report it. Today's update directly responds to that feedback.
The result is a workflow that sidesteps the WordPress admin dashboard entirely for many common tasks. A user can instruct an AI agent in natural language, and the agent handles creation, categorization, tagging, scheduling and metadata — confirming each step before executing.
Design-Aware Content Generation
One capability worth flagging for digital experience practitioners: before generating a page or post, agents can query the site's active theme to retrieve its color palette, typography settings, spacing tokens and available block patterns. Content is then built to inherit those design-system values, and Automattic says outputs update automatically if the theme is changed afterward.
This design-awareness moves agentic content creation closer to a managed, brand-safe workflow — a concern that has historically slowed enterprise adoption of generative tools in content operations.
Safety Architecture
Automattic is clearly anticipating scrutiny over handing write access to autonomous agents. The announcement details six overlapping control mechanisms. Every change requires explicit user approval before execution. New posts and pages default to draft status, and agents warn before modifying already-published content.
Deletions of posts, pages, comments and media move to trash and remain recoverable for 30 days; permanent taxonomy deletions require a second confirmation. All agent activity appears in the site's existing Activity Log. The agent inherits standard WordPress user-role restrictions — an Editor cannot change site settings, a Contributor cannot publish. And each of the 19 operations can be individually toggled on or off per site.
Availability and Access, and What This Means for DXP Landscape
Write capabilities are live today for all WordPress.com paid-plan subscribers. Users enable MCP at wordpress.com/me/mcp, toggle the desired write operations and connect their AI client using the platform's setup guide. Automattic has published an MCP Tools Reference and a prompt-examples library to support rollout.
The move positions WordPress.com alongside a growing list of CMS and DXP vendors — including Contentful, Contentstack and Adobe Experience Manager — that are exposing content APIs to AI orchestration layers. Automattic's approach, at least in this release, calls for direct integration with MCP-native clients already in enterprise use, rather than requiring a proprietary agent or intermediary layer.

Safety Controls
Automattic asserts the system includes multiple protections: approval required for every change, new posts start as drafts, deletions move to trash for 30 days and all changes are logged in the Activity Log. Write capabilities respect existing user role permissions.
Write capabilities are available on all WordPress.com paid plans through the MCP dashboard with no extra installation.
WordPress.com Advances AI
WordPress.com ecosystem vendors advanced AI capabilities throughout 2025. In July, WP Engine launched an AI toolkit introducing Smart Search AI, AI-Powered Recommendations and a Managed Vector Database. Crownpeak launched FirstSpirit Quality Management tools for WordPress.com in August.
Automattic restructured operations with April 2025 layoffs affecting roughly 281 employees before resuming full sponsored contributions to WordPress Core in May. WordPress 7.0 Beta 1 arrived in February 2026 featuring real-time collaboration and a new Web Client AI API.
MCP-Enabled AI Agents Advancing CMS Operations
Model Context Protocol is emerging as a key integration layer enabling AI agents to interact with content management systems in structured, governed ways.
