Think PDF — and you probably still think Adobe. But it's not the only option around.
Take Burlington, Mass-based Nuance, for example, which today launches PDF 2. An upgrade of its PDF application, it aims to make it easier for business to use PDF’s in enterprise workflows and across enterprise apps.
Addressing Windows 10 Adoption
This new version of the Nuance PDF application improves usability, compatibility and security. It dovetails with Microsoft’s unfolding strategy around the Windows 10 platform.
Jeffrey Segarra, senior director of Imaging Product Marketing at Nuance Communications, told CMSWire the company is addressing growing adoption of Windows 10 and the use of convertible laptop devices such as the Microsoft Surface. Nuance Power PDF 2 leverages both Windows 10 and hybrid devices to provide customers a new way to interact with their documents, he said.
“Customers that they don’t want to be hardwired into one marketing cloud and are seeking alternatives to Adobe Acrobat," he said, adding that Power PDF 2 is "easier to use and support" and provides "better value" than Adobe.
It offers these features through a familiar Office-like interface that also supports Windows 10 touch-enabled 2-in-1 convertible laptop devices like Surface.
It also provides tools to annotate, mark up, sign, secure, redact and compress PDFs, and create and work with PDF forms, making it easy to edit and publish PDF files or convert files from Word to PDF and from PDF to Word.
Not Your Father's PDFs
Power PDF 2 promises compatibility with the latest in hardware and software advances. It supports Microsoft Active Directory Rights Management Services, so users have access to the most up-to-date security and encryption technologies, for example.
It also provides advanced connections to cloud storage and document management systems — services continually changing. "Power PDF makes it easy and fast to open and save PDF files when using them," he said.
There are a number other improvements, including:
Learning Opportunities
- Improved document security: Uses Microsoft Active Directory Rights Management Services to lock down confidential documents without passwords
- Greater accessibility: Tag editing and reading order editor
- Add-ons: New add-ons for Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2016 enable users to create files from inside these apps
- Document intelligence: It also comes with enhanced document intelligence that makes document search more accurate by allowing users to see and edit text results of the optical character recognition processes directly in searchable PDFs
Digital Enterprises
One of the most interesting for enterprise users here is the built-in ability ton open and save PDF files directly into options such as Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and Box.
This places the PDFs into the heart of enterprise processes and makes it accessible to most any user, no matter what system they are using.
“Power PDF has no proprietary PDF capabilities. PDF features, such as security, buttons, stamps and annotations that are created using Power PDF are accessible by all other industry-standard PDF readers,” Segarra said.
PDF 2 is a response to a wider move in the market towards the rise of PDFs as an industry standard format that can be used in all digital processes.
“People are beginning to accept that PDF is a true industry-standard document format, not something proprietary to Adobe. They see there are many ways to utilize PDF without being dependent on one vendor,” Segarra said.
“In response, we will continue to integrate all of our solutions — PDF, document capture and print management — together. Nuance will stay focused on solving the big problems that our customers are facing in document workflow and security.”
